View Full Version : Kill the MSN Messenger...please

Hi...every time I click on "Outlook Express" some evil little white symbol appears in my taskbar.

It looks like the white playing piece from a game of Cluedo (can't remember anyone other than Professor Plum and Miss Scarlet).

Hover over the symbol with the mouse and a sign appears to tell me, "MSN Messenger Service - Not Logged On"

That probably accounts for the little rosette like badge that the guy is wearing - with a small cross in it.

Now, I've clicked left mouse buttons, right mouse buttons, been into msconfig and start profiles...all that stuff - but I cannot find a reliable way to kill the little bugger permanantly.

:( :( :( :( :(

Start/Settings/Control Panel;

Add/Remove Programs;

Stay on the Install/Uninstall tab;

Scroll down until you find - MSN Messenger Service (version number).

Highlight it, click Add/Remove

Click YES to remove.

If you want to remove the messenger contact list from Outlook Express without deleting the program (i.e. if someone else uses it on your computer):

View menu Layout Then un-select the contacts box

Have a good one, Dave.

MSN messenger would have been a good idea had their Hotmail security not been so appallingly inadequate. Now all MSN messenger serves to do is to tell me when some junk mail has arrived from the Land of the Crimplene Lard-ar$e, usually some idiot get-rich-quick scheme or filth from some porn-broker.

How I would dearly love to parcel it all up and forward it to [email protected] or wherever he is with a request to stop trying to persuade everyone to 'upgrade' to some newer Windows OS every 2 years and to take some time out instead to sort out Hotmail!!

Hi Icarus,
I tired your suggestion, but MSN messenger is not in Add/Remove programs! I have a new Dell Laptop with Win ME and I wonder do I have to INSTALL MSN first to be able to remove it? I do have the little lad with the rosette in the corner. Clicking on it opens the MSN Messenger Service and looks like it wants me to apply for a passport.
Anyone else get rid of it?
Thanks

Certainly Icarus is right as far as Win98se is concerned, but I don't know about ME.

How about right clicking and then exit?

It wont get rid of it permanently, but at least it will stay out of the way for your present use.

Yes MSN messenger is a real pain. It kept crashing my PC and caused all sorts of problems when attempting to reboot

WideBodiedEng

To get rid of the little devil in WIN ME, it is slightly different:

- Go into control panel
- Click on add/remove programs:
- CLICK ON THE 'WINDOWS INSTALLATION' TAB
- Clear the checkbox concerning MSN messenger (I think it's in the communications or accessories group)
- Click on apply, then ok.
- Reboot.
- Breathe a sigh of relief. :D

Hope this helps

Brit
