Hi folks,
Does anyone know what the NZ equivelant is to the DGA endorsement? or if there is such a thing in NZ? Apparently it is now a QF/QL requirement.

From the website:
Hold or have held endorsements for NDB, VOR, ILS, LLZ and DGA on an Australian Civil Instrument Rating or New Zealand equivalent.

Thanks in advance

The DGA is what happens when a New Zealand style DME step makes love to a VORSEC chart.
No equivalent (TTMRA wise) so the only way to do it is to go for a fly with someone who can endorse it on your licence.
Personally I think it should be given to TTMRA applicants that have VOR and DME on their licence, because there are no skills required for a DGA that are not covered by these.
Ive been getting around without one but it makes life awkward at times (especially at night when even doing a visual approach means I'm usually stuck at above 5000' until I hit the 10nm MSA.

For what it's worth, for my last two Oz IR renewals, DGA was left off deliberately! I still do them though.

Do they still exist/are they still required if you also hold a VOR/NDB rating? Given that the procedure is essentially the same as a VOR/DME, perhaps CASA has knocked DGAs on the head to save paperwork?

Interesting, well all I know is that i can't get past stage one unless I have it, which seems a little silly considering im flying RPT turboprops ,using NDB, VOR, ILS and RNAV most days...oh and the DME

DGA doesn't require renewal. It's valid as long as your instrument rating is valid. Yes they still exist. Yes the rating is required if you want to fly them; you cannot fly them just because you have VOR and/or NDB. You aren't seriously suggesting CASA would ever do anything to save paperwork ?????

Mate, in your application cover letter/email include words to the effect there's no such thing in NZ.

Photocopy/scan the relevant page from NZ IR quals you can get and politely point out that DGA's simply arent there.

Maybe those requirements were invented by the same HR lady now at Vaus?;)

I came to Aussie, we did a couple in the sim and that was the end of that. In fact I dont think its on my licence either.

Cheers waren9, will do. For what it's worth i'm pretty sure it's not a requirement at VB

One thing that goes with having been around for a few years is that you get to be the keeper of the verbal history and secret pilot's business!

I am sure someone in here will correct me if I am wrong BUT, my recollection of the DGA is that it came about as a result of a spate of crashes where pilot's misinterpreted the charts and descended early - with unfortunate results. The "Big Brother" response was to create a DGA endorsement that we all had to do at renewal time in order to continue doing DME arrivals and subsequently GPS arrivals. Prior to that, if you were endorsed on the tracking aid ie NDB or VOR then you were legal to do them.

Of course, sometime before that we used to do DME homings and approaches/descents and a typical IR renewal often ended with the victim, errr pilot!, on one engine, partial panel and with nothing to get home and down on but the DME.

on one engine, partial panel and with nothing to get home and down on but the DME.

.. that's probably stretching the tester/testee friendship just a tad ... unless the W/V is not too great .. my one and only for real DME was at Wynyard in the usual gale .. talk about going around in circles with only the vaguest idea of where I was at the time ...
