I love it, another one in the eye for the French. Though I am bemused at such a comment from an Austrian.... :}:}

Grauniad: Surge in support for far right ahead of poll reflects centre-left crisis across EU (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/sep/25/eu)

Karl Friedrich is proud to live in Karl Marx Hof, Vienna's vast monument to municipal socialism. But not as proud as he used to be.

"We had great times here. There were artists and writers all around. Great parties. They're all gone now," says the former communist. "Now half the families in my block are immigrants. They can't speak German. They can't even speak English."........... :}

Whilst I cannot support the more 'radical' aspects of far-right politics, I have to side with such sentiments as above. The quickest way to alienate the home-grown (whatever that means these days) citizens of countries is to be unable to speak, to a reasonable standard the language of that country AND be aware and respectful of that country's way of life.

If we filter out the 'obvious' connatations of the far right in Austria and the past, I can well understand the fear of being overwhelmed by people from the new Europe. Austria is a small-ish country and for them the influx must be more noticeable than say in the UK, Germany or France.

I remember reading some figure of 70million (?) or more being spent on translators last year in the UK, so that persons unable (or unwilling) to learn the language to be able to avail themselves of public services.

Austria has always been a polyglot nation though. All those Czechs, Hungarians, Romanians etc., who lived there during the eastern bloc years, and probably still do, though to be fair most of them did speak German.
70 million on translators? Well perhaps it would be better spent on some of our own. Half of the posters on this aviation forum can't even spell hangar properly!
