Wilsons Prom Airfield

Hey all,

Just wondering if anybody knows anything about the field down at Wilsons Prom. I was over it today and noticed it looked rather well kept. No sign of any aircraft or hangers, but two largish grass runways with white markers out on each, a clearly marked helipad and some buildings to the northern end.

I don't have the AOPA airfield directory so I don't know if its in that but its not on any map I've seen. I have a feeling it may once have been called 'Casey Field' or something...

Just curious if to see if its still in use...

The "Wilsons Prom" airport as you put it is actually a firefighting strip belonging to the Dept of Sustainability and Environment so not a place for a private aircraft unless in an emergency. It's closer to Yannakie than anywhere else from memory. That being said a mate landed there the other day for some relief of the urinary kind and nobody raced into tell him off.

"Casey Field" as you have mentioned was actually in Berwick and was closed to build the Monash University Berwick Campus.

These two strips are approximately 75 miles apart!

It is possibly the base for Prom Country Scenic Flights. A relatively new operator doing joyflights over the Prom using a Cessna 182P from Yanakie.

If you fly over Berwick the old runway can still be seen by those who flew there.

If you talking about the gravel one, it belongs to DSE (Dept of name changes)

If it's the grass one, then a private seasonal GA operator as mentioned above (sorry forgot about that strip).

Yeah i was talking about the grass one, two crossing grass runways.

Thats a private strip is it? Its not small and looks very well maintained.

If you do decide to use the DSE strip, be very sure that you have cleared the roos off. The times I've been there, it would be nearly impossible to land without hitting one.The strip is maintained as a fire bombing base .

I drove by the airstrip last weekend but would like to locate it on Google maps. Is it just south of Yanakie on the west side of C444 just before the road goes from the paddocks into the wooded area ?

Alternatively, lat/longs would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

With GE its at about 38 57' 18 S 146 17' 46 E

Its a shame its not openly available. I would have thought it would be very popular. Maybe thats why....

Ah- guys - this strip is in a national park - its against the National Parks Act to land and aircraft without permission from Parks Victoria. Try the Wilsons Prom park prior to landing.
