I am an 18 year old local boy who loves flying a lot more than others. Some years ago when I do a body check, the doctor says I have colour weakness, and he said it will affect my choices of jobs in the future. I want to know if colour weakness will rule me out of a career of flying jets and even just getting a PPL? Or will I be rejected from both CX and KA CPP or even ATC controller in first sense? I hope someone will give me an answer as I have to decide what way i should go in the future, thanks in advance!:) And I also heard from another part of this forum discussing about the lantern test for quite sometime, how exactly does it work? Does Hong Kong have such a test?

Look up the hong kong civil aviation website, and look for a list of aviation medicine doctors. ie these are the doctors that can do medicals for pilots controllers etc. Give one a call, and speak to the nurse they are normally the ones who do the eye test.

PS the eye sight requirements are different for different countries. I hold US,AUS,NZ, And HK licences the US being the most strict on eye sight.

Thank you for your prompt response! I will get to go to one of those medical examiners to have a check. Just one question, is the Cathay Pacific Medical Center for Cathay flight crews only?

look up Dr O'Tremba. he is near the penninsula hotel. most cx/ka crew i know go to him, as did i. he can do HKAD and CASA (you will need CASA for either CPP).

he refers the eye part of the medical to a specialist (an aussie guy in central) who is really nice too.

colour does come up on the eye test though. for CASA i had a colourblinness test.

As far as I am aware if you hold a Class 1 medical from an ICAO state then that will be acceptable to the HK CAD and Cathay. CX do have some reservations about certain pre-existing conditions, but moderately compensated eyesight is unlikely to affect your application.

what are the limitations for someone being short-sighted if applying as DEFO?

DEFOs currently join on C scales (ie lower conditions) than their colleagues, and block an upgrade for a currently employed SO, to whom the company will not pay bypass because they "haven't got to assessing them as suitable for upgrade yet". A lose-lose situation for everyone except the company.

Sounds like short-sightedness is a prerequisite.

Just wondering have they got any limits for the CCP as a SO? Is it the same as DEFO- as long as you hold a class 1 medical issued from an ICAO state you will get through?
