Someone posted on PPRuNe recently on this subject - but I can't find the thread.

It should be pretty safe generally speaking but there is always a risk. Perhaps using a DEBIT card would be safer, if you make sure your debit card is linked only to an account with limited funds in it - just a suggestion!

BBC reports an interesting incident on this subject at http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_597000/597828.stm

(I found the original post - on the "Misc Notices" board)

NOT !!!
DO NOT use your DEBIT CARD!
1. It may not be insured in case of fraud.
2. If they do make good on it(your bank), it will be after the whole thing is settled.
3. Web is secure only if:
If you have no snoopers
If your merchant has good server/sense
Example: all order fillers on AMAZON are said to have access to CC#.. but it is hearsay at this time. Are they all bonded???

I buy online. I use only 1 "certain" card.
I buy online all the time.. if not broke. [no female shoppping commments, plz.]
I have a small card which will accept a large payment over the phone and post the funds within 3 days to be used. Otherwise I keep the available credit on this card pretty small.
Use a credit card because:
1. They are generally insured against fraud. If you get stung, they will make good on it before it all falls out in investigagions/court. This is especially important if you stung for a lot of money,
and important if investigaions take a long time...

If you are really concerned, just call the 1-800 number, and give your order over the phone, just don't use a cell phone. http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/tongue.gif
