Sparx,

Within the JAA jargon it is a renewal that you need not a revalidation.

Its in LASORS: If the rating has expired by 5 years or more you have to start again - most of a type rating course! Its in F8.5:

i. Type technical training and a pass in the ground examination in accordance with the TRTO/FTO approval.
ii. Complete at least 2 hours of flight training on type.
iii. Complete a Proficiency Check in accordance with Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 2.240. The LST/LPC form gives the TRTO/FTO opportunity to indicate what refresher training has been completed.

The TRE cannot sign you off. It all has to go to the Belgrano with a fee of course. In essence, they deal with it as if it was a new rating.

If its less than 5 years, then you need to do a minimum of 2 hours on type, PLUS an OPC. This time the TRE can you sign you off in your licence
