Hi,
Is the CAA CPL/IR issued by South Africa is accepted by UK CAA or other countries under UK standards?

And I also would like to know how can we convert the SA CPL/IR to a JAR equivalent in Africa? I mean is there any countries inside Africa where we can go and change the license to JAR?

Nope, you would have to convert an SA CPL/IR license to JAR.

Nowhere in Africa that I know of that do conversions.

Have a look here for the rules and regs on UK licensing :-

LASORS: LASORS 2008 | Publications | CAA (http://www.caa.co.uk/application.aspx?catid=33&pagetype=65&appid=11&mode=detail&id=1591)

It's a big file, 74.2mb so you might wish to download it from the page linked above.

43 Air School in Port Alfred, South Africa have been doing JAA training for a while now. They might be able to guide you on this. You will have to sit the JAA exams (I assume you'll sit the ATPL exams as there is no point in siting the CPL exams) in the UK. It might be possible for you to do the flight test in SA as I believe 43 sometimes have a UK DE come out to SA to do this for there students but check with them.

You'll also need a Class One medical and since this is an initial examination I'm pretty sure you'll have to do this at Gatwick first, thereafter Philip Buys in Pretoria can renew your JAA medical each year at the same time as your SA medical though there are two separate fees for doing this.

The whole process is neither cheap nor easy. The studying is more than what you covered for the SA licence.

Need more help/info? PM me.

Hey guys and gals,

It looks like I will need a south african issued ATPL in order to complete a contract in South Africa.

Do you know how one would go about converting/validating a UK CAA ATPL into a SA CAA ATPL?

Hi

I would be really keen to know myself I have the 14 subjects (UK) and have done 150 hours flying all in SA. I have found out that to get the SA CPL you only have to do 3 subjects LAW, Met, Operations and Procedures and performance, the school that I have done all my flying at are getting an answer about the ATPL stuff......

Watch this space and ill let you know or if you like pm me if you have any more questions!

I went to SA back in 2000 and converted my UK fATPL to an SA CPL. Had to write all seven of the SA CPL subjects, get a medical and then did the flight test. Fairly straight forward.

My UK ATPL will be unfrozen soon and now I wish to go for the SA ATPL but the thought of doing all seven ATPL subjects (many of which are a rehash of the CPL exams with some icing on the cake) does not fill me with glee. I've been away from SA for two years so not too sure what has changed.

Perhaps we can all swap some info and help each other on this?

But here there is some English language confusion?
A conversion and a validation are not the same?
A conversion implies that you get one book and rights for another, - an exchange almost.
A validation is the right to fly in a country using a foreign licence but only for the duration of the foreign licence and only within it is limitations.

So what is meant by what?
