I heard that Randy Green died yesterday 16th September. When I was undergoing No 14 Flying Instructors Course at RAAF Central Flying School East Sale in August 1955, I was lucky enough to have Flight Lieutenant Randy Green as my instructor on Tiger Moths and Wirraways. Previously he had flown on operations in Korea in Meteors. A first class pilot, he was also the ideal flying instructor - patient, lots of good humour.
He later became a graduate of the UK Empire Test Pilots course.

In a former life I was a techie at the RAAF Museum. I met Randall Green there and spent countless hours listening to his tremendous tales of flying. He was a true gentelman and was, unlike many today, a very humble pilot. What a lovely bloke - a great loss.

Sad news!

Randy was a top bloke and as some readers would know played a significant role in the test flying of the Millicer Air Tourer, later to become the Victa Airtourer. He carried out the first flight of VH-FMM at MB back in 1959, almost 50 yrs ago. There were no civil test pilots about at the time so he got the job along with some other test flying whilst he was still in the RAAF. I remember him telling the story of a canopy on a Meteor blowing out at around 40,000ft or higher and saying that his ears had not been the same since... phew!
He also played a role in the buying back of the Airtourer project from AESL in Hamilton NZ in 1979 when his negotiating skills saw the asking price drop by two thirds. He was guest speaker at the Airtourer Convention in Mildura in 1999 where his stories held the interest of those present. He will be remembered by many, I am sure.

As TRIADIC pointed out Randy was intimately involved in the early Airtourer story, an intimacy I know he enjoyed.

I believe ( I may be wrong here ) Randy also test flew the original 707.

The AVRO one that is in the Point Cook Museum, not the Boeing one.

Another piece of Australian Aviation heritage passes on.
