BA flight loses fairing

Translation:

Schiphol, 16th of September

An airplane of BA has lost a part shortly after take of from Schiphol Airport.

According to a spokesperson from the Dutch Safety Inspection, the so-called fairing has landed in the vicinity of Spaarnwoude. A fairing is a aerodynamic shroud of an airplane.

It is a part of an airplane that, stressed by the spokesperson, does not influence the flight safety. The part, about 50 by 150 cm in size, has not been found, so far as the spokesperson knows of. (?)
It is still unclear how the part became detached from the plane.


Anybody know about this? Was it a flap track fairing?

Not heard about it but the flap track fairing is an aerodynamic fairing that covers the flap track. You are allowed to fly without an amount of them as long as it is in compliance with the CDL. The penalty is increase fuel usage.

Can't imagine it was an engine cowling. They seem to make a terrible mess of the leading edge, the stab and door 2 when they depart!

According newspaper Parool (http://www.parool.nl/parool/nl/224/Binnenland/article/detail/32665/2008/09/17/Vliegtuig-verliest-onderdeel.dhtml) it was a Ba146 loosing a fairing "sticking out underneath the wing". (Flaptrack fairing?) It landed in somebodys backyard.

Happened more than once in the US where the dropped part was offered up for a sum of money. In most cases the offer was declined and the Feds were sent in to recover the item only for investigation after which it was returned to the new owner who of course found that there was no market for it since it was no longer airworthy by itself.

One guy was incensed at this and made a museum piece of it in his front yard for all to see from the nearby road. I think somebody stole it a year later for their private yard-junk collection

That's more German than Dutch, we tend to like volkswagen golf here in the low countries... Offcourse with numerous bits stuck on with doublesided stickytape, exhausts big enough to fit a 1 gallon coke bottle and noise louder than a 747 at takeoff...
