View Full Version : HELP PLEASE with internet properties settings?

lame

On both my desk top and lap top at present, when I log on I have to reset the "check for new pages" options every time?

I can select to have a new version of the pages I visit every time for that session on line, but cannot "lock" it in . I "think" this is because the apply button is greyed out? I am fairly sure?? it wasn't always like this? AOL as usual were no help at all, any ideas please?

I might be missing something here, so forgive me if this is useless, but all you should have to do is tools, Internet options, Settings (in temp internet options) then check for new page , then ok you dont have to apply this setting

Yes there is an intermittent bug in IE5.
The refresh setting gets set back to 'Never' for some users every time IE is started. For other users, the settings are retained.
Of course, MS denies that this happens but I have seen it regularly (although not consistently). Our 'tekkies' are supposed to be looking into it, but no answer yet and I think it's low down on their list.

Thank you both for your input.

SLF 999,

That is what AOL tech support kept saying, but it doesn't work, it only lasts until I log off? They had no idea?

PaperTiger,

Guess that must be what it is then? Hopefully may be fixed soon with IE6?

Best regards,

"lame"

I've never had the problem myself, but I skipped IE5.0 and went to 5.5 as soon as it came out (for unrelated security reasons).
I think it 'fixed' itself since MS seems unaware of the problem. No experience with 6.

PaperTiger,

Yes I am also running IE5.5 at present, but did have IE5 and 5.01 installed on both computers previously. As I said just have to try to remember to reset it every time I log on. Was just hoping that someone knew a fix for it?

Best regards,

Just on the off chance... are you using either WinNT or Win2000, or maybe have multiple user profile set in Win98?

It sounds like it's a permissions problem when IE is trying to store the setting in the registry (unlikely with Win9x but it's still possible to have the registry hosed).

I'll try to hunt down the relevant key in question, but an idea of operating system version would start me in the right direction...

FlyingGiraffe,

No, I am still using Windows 98 second edition, currently with IE5.5 and on AOL, with AOL6.

Any help appreciated.......

Okay, this might do it.... unless AOL have made a real mess of IE (doubtful, but possible...!)

Are you familiar with using the registry editor, regedit.exe? If not, it's not that daunting as long as you stay away from the "delete" key!! :)

First of all, shut down all instances of Internet Explorer (including this one!! :))

Assuming you're not familiar with regedit (apologies if it's a grandma/eggs sitation here!)... choose "Run..." from the Start menu and type "regedit" and hit enter. You should now be looking at something a little like Window Explorer in appearance -- folders on the left, data on the right.

Navigate with the folders to the following "path":
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Internet Settings

Looking down the Name column on the right, you should see an entry called "SyncMode5" with "REG_DWORD" in the next column and then a number of the form "0x00000000 (0)"

Those numbers have the following meaning:
0x00000000 Never
0x00000002 Every time you start MSIE
0x00000003 Every visit to the page
0x00000004 Automatically

By double-clicking on the "SyncMode5" text you can change the value -- it looks like you want "3" from your earlier post.

Hit OK on the dialog to save the setting and start-up IE to see if it likes the value...

FlyingGiraffe,

Have tried your idea, and although they were both already set to '3' there, have now restarted the lap top and it appears to be okay now?

Thank you, will advise if it is actually fixed on both later, but again thank you very much.........

OzPax1,

If that cute smiley means finger trouble? I guess it was, but I still think the problem was built in by AOL, and even their tech support people couldn't fix it?

Luckily for me, and other PPRuNers, FlyingGiraffe is a professional and knew the answer......

I think OzPax was suggesting you were giving a 'digital salute' in response to the request for money :)

But kudos to FlyingGiraffe for sorting it. Of course now we know the answer, a reference can be found on the Micro$oft site http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q201/5/35.ASP although this suggests they have no clue what the cause is. Sadly, not unusual.

PaperTiger,

Possibly, I wasn't sure what it meant, took it as meaning I had finger trouble? A very good smiley either way?

I would NEVER do that, in fact I have thanked FlyingGiraffe personally via email.

I gather it must be a fairly rare problem, as I said AOL tech support just kept saying "but that must fix it", which it didn't of course?

Best regards,

"lame"

Typical bl00dy Microsoft! Had to be in their KB somewhere, didn't it...! Although I can sit smugly in the knowledge that I figured it out -- and actually got it right for once! http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/cool.gif

OzPax1 - I gotta get me some of those less politically correct smilies!!
