Capt PPRuNe just signed an agreement to upgrade the current server (Dual PIII 550MHz, 512Mb RAM, dual 9Gb SCSI RAID) to a Dual PIII 800MHz, 1Gb RAM, dual 18Gb SCSI RAID (10,000rpm). Change over should occur around beginning April. . .. .It will probably mean PPRuNe being off-air for a day or two but the new higher powered server should put a stop to the recent server crashes we have ben experiencing at peak times.

with the costs for the mentioned equipment at rock bottom level this is a wise decision.. .. .I was very lucky also, found 2 18.2 GB SCSI drives (brandnew) at offer on Loot, each for £115, told the vendor shortly before the ad disappeared that I am prepared to pay £85 for each and now I have them <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> . .. .You techies need to look at the heat in the machine...After I have proven several times to stunning customers that just one additional fan can speed up the machine tremendeously (which means lifesaving of equipment) the investment for noise-killing devices and additional cooling devices appear very reasonable for everyone.. .. .Hope that all goes well as we don't like PPRuNe offline for tooooooo long...

The machine will be installed in the secure server room of a major ISP. The heat generated by it won't be a problem.... but our use of the ISP's bandwidth might be <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />

Dispatcher...it is not the heat outside the server...it is the heat AT the harddrives and AT the CPUs and AT the RAM, one major thing everyone forgets as well....AT the PSU.... .. .If you ever get hold of manuals, only up to 25 degrees C is 100% performance possible. RAM, CPU and harddrives are often close to 50 degrees, inside the PSU it is often boiling hot as this device is also used to extract the air from the cabinet. . .. .The "old" server should not collapse at all with just running this board.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="confused.gif" />

The current collapses are purely due to the server being overloaded. The forum software we are currently running, UBB, was never designed to handle the number of users, number of threads or load we put upon it. Basically, the CPUs and disk can't keep up with the high number of very heavy "process start" requests.. .. .The server hardware is a high quality (and rather expensive) rack mounted "pizza box" and has never given us problems.. .. .--Mik
