Have been using McAfee Ver 4 for some time, went to get the latest DAT files, got a message that Ver 4 is no longer supported and I must buy ($39) ver 6 for further support.. .. .I thought (saw it on the web page or on the box) that buying Mcafee virus program gave unlimited lifetime support. How does that (if true) fit with charging me $39 for an upgrade I don't want? I can understand that they need to drop ver 4, but why not give the new version to those of us who have previous supported versions?. .. .Assuming that this is not resolved, anyone have a recommendation for another program that is as good as Mcafee and has updates included?

I've never used McAfee so can offer no comparisons but I've no complaints about Norton.. .. .Auto online updates, checks outbound as well as inbound email, first class new threat advice, etc.

You were not imagining it boofhead. I have a McAfee VirusScan CD-ROM case right in front of me. The last item in the feature list states "Lifetime Virus Signature Updates." That's what you get to see at the store before you pay your money. However the license that you accept by virtue of installation states that "you are entitled to download and use all upgrades of the SOFTWARE (including virus signature files (DAT files)) released during the one year period following purchase.". .. .Some lifetime! Software - what a racket.. .. .The DOS version of F-Protect remains free for personal use.. .http://www.f-prot.com/f-prot/download/getfpdosfree.html. .Updated virus signature files can be found at Simtel mirrors. I have used F-Protect for over ten years. However, unless you safely configure your email and internet applications I don't recommend it as your only malware protection.

Brian/boofhead. .. .In the computer world "lifetime" normally refers to the supported lifetime of a product, not the three score years and ten of the user. I'd guess that version 4 just became unsupported and therefore died. However, I agree that most people would understand "lifetime" differently, so it is a bad way to advertise. . .. .What they wrote is strictly accurate - they say the updates are available, not that they are free. It's a bad way to sell a product...

If you have the time, it might be worth giving this one a run in the Small Claims Court.

I'm running v 4.0.3, scan engine 4.0.7, and have just downloaded the latest Dat files 4.0.4191. Sure, there's the usual message that i ought to upgrade to v 6.02, for which I'll have to pay if I want as it's well over a year since my free upgrade expired.

I'm confused (not an unusual situation). . .According to the box my McAffee VirusScan came in it's version 5 and according to the CD it's v 5.0.1. . .According to the home screen, the scan engine is version 4.0.50. It doesn't seem to tell me anywhere what version the program itself is.. .According to McAffee they are no longer supporting version 4.0.50, but is this of the program or the scan engine?. .. .Every so often, when I download an update it tells me that my files are very old and I need to download a complete new set. Other times it just downloads the latest update. There seems to be no logic.
