CNN: Two Russian bombers land in Venezuela (http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/09/10/russia.venezuela/index.html)

Two Russian bombers have landed at a Venezuelan airfield, from which they will carry out training flights for several days, the Russian news agency Interfax reported Wednesday. The Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bombers landed at Venezuela's Libertador military airfield and "will spend several days carrying out training flights over neutral waters, after which they will return to the base," Interfax reported, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky, a ministry spokesman, told Interfax that NATO fighters followed the bombers on their 13-hour flight over the Arctic Ocean and the Atlantic. "All flights by air force aircraft have been and are marked by strict conformity to the international rules on the use of air space over neutral waters," Drobyshevsky told Interfax.

The U.S. will monitor the Russian training, said Pentagon officials who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak on the information.

On Monday, Russia announced it might hold joint naval maneuvers with Venezuela in the Caribbean. The declaration came in the wake of increased tension between Russia and the United States over Russia's invasion last month of the former Soviet republic of Georgia, a U.S. ally that aspires to join NATO.

Russia on Monday denied any link between that announcement and the conflict in Georgia, although Russia has criticized U.S. support for Georgia, and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has long antagonized Washington.

Earlier this month, Chavez said Venezuela would welcome the Russian air force, according to Russian news agency Novosti. "If Russian long-range bombers should need to land in Venezuela, we would not object to that either. We will also welcome them," Chavez said on September 1, according to Novosti.

Muscle flexing in the form of a Maritme Exercise.

There are also several warships enroute seen as a response to the US ships off the coast of Georgia, although it is claimed the exercise has been planned for over a year.

A Cold War is healthy, for we may get a Defence Budget.

Past form would indicate it'll be magically within our existing capabilities and that "we're stretched a bit more, not overstretched", said a MoD spokesman at some point in the future.

No doubt they'd add the Air Training Corps to the reserve list.

At least then the RAF has a chance of getting a few people who can hit a target at 25m to bolster the ranks should the balloon go up.;)

All part of kosova/georgia/nato game. It would not surprise me if russia opened base in venezuela, both naval and air. It would not be possible in cuba. Pres hugo chavez would love it as paronoid about us,russia would have a hand in us oil supplies. In russian eyes would counteract nato expansion. If it wanted to really raise tensions deploy medium range nuke missiles on ships or land.

Now don't be like that :) And don't forget our Vigilant fleet's highly classified TTW role as a show of force, with follow-on force-multiplying Vikings to strike the decisive blow using the [REDACTED] weapons system in conjunction with [REDACTED] and [REDACTED].

Perhaps the Russians will be soon accepting further hospitality from the Venezuelans. BBC Report (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7612778.stm)

The US plans to expel Venezuela's ambassador, officials say, in retaliation for Venezuela's expulsion of the US ambassador to Caracas.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Thursday that US representative Patrick Duddy had 72 hours to leave.

He said the measure was in solidarity with ally Bolivia, which has also been involved in a tit-for-tat expulsion of ambassadors with Washington.

Bolivia said the US envoy was inciting protests against President Evo Morales.

"The plan is to kick him out," a US official, who did not want to be named, said of the Venezuelan ambassador to Reuters news agency.

On Thursday, Mr Chavez said he was recalling his envoy to the US, after telling the American ambassador: "Go to hell 100 times."

Well why be based in Florida when there is a base just 20 miles from the coast that the US operates many aircraft from.

I think we are getting into the world of petty tit for tat digs , its time leaders nipped this in the bud and acted responsibly rather than try and get one up. USA stay away from Georgia and forget what is winding up the russians, if USA does that then russia will back away from too.
Its all about give and take.

I dunno why i speak as i know **** all
