I suspect its a feature . .. .I think you'll find its supposed to be a fire/flame sound and it probably corresponds to a thread getting more than x replies and getting that little flame symbol. . .. .Only guessing mind.

Long Final. .Got me going as well, thought I'd picked up some awful virus that would lead to the end of my computer as I know it. Well, glad it's something apparently so innocuous!

I believe it is supposed to be the sound of thundering hooves on a betting ad that comes up at the bottom of the the page every so often.

Good - that means I can start eating curries again. Gave up 'just in case........' - well, I wasn't sure....

I get the sound as well, and it might force me to stop reading these forums in the office.. .. .Bit counter productive on the Ads front. Any chance of them being gently persuaded to leave the sounds out?. .. .PS

Having looked about I take it to be associated to the Cheltenham ad, and therefore should be short lived.. .. .LF

I thought it was a herd of hooves of one sort or another. Very disconcerting. I thought my sound system was cracking up. . .. .Errrrr! I won't mind a bit if I never hear it again.

I heard a cuckoo in the office the other day. Scared the life out of me. (see www.phenology.org.uk). . . . [ 13 March 2002, 18:32: Message edited by: small em ]

Are you sure it's not the sound of PPRuNe Admin clearing off to the pub again and leaving us PPRuNe-less until they return suitably refreshed?

I just about fell off my seat when I heard it- sounded like an explosion- I thought that my computer/ speakers were about to blow up! (I was looking at the upper part of the scroll, and didn't see the ad until later.). .. .OK for light relief, but tedious after the third repeat.

That extremely irritating sound effect has actually done me a favour - it's almost totally cured me of my PPRuNe addiction. Compared to before, I rarely visit the board now.

It did me a favour as well. I don't have speakers on my office PC, but have got hi-fi ones on my home PC.. .When the thunder of hooves happened - my ginger cat did a vertical take-off from where he was lying, on the keyboard, & has not pussy footed over it since!

I have a simple response to annoying ads. Particularly those that force me to listen to their annoying noise. . .. .I make absolutely sure that I never, ever make use of that company or their products again. I refuse to visit their websites & place them in my restricted sites folder.. .. .To reinforce the point I often email them & advise them that their annoying ads have served to drive me away from using their services or product.

Guys to get rid of hoof sounds and annoying bloodey ads on any web page for that matter, download AdSubtract SE. I use it without fail. Easy to use and by deletin ads and noises it realy does speed up your downloading. Best of all its free!

And yeh Tinny I feel the same way mate. By clicking on their banners or buyin their products you only encourage the b@stards to make more bloodey annoying ads! . .. .I also note from my AdSub that PPRuNe is where I get the most intercepts from those bloodey doubleclick and mediaplex sites.

It did work though. We haven't talked about an ad so much since that Netscape-killing JavaScript one.... . . . [ 16 March 2002, 22:35: Message edited by: Evo7 ]

Depend on the ad & the company. If it's an annoying pop up, flickering ad or one that makes noise then it gets closed immediately. Then the usually website that generated it gets a nastygram & added to my banned sites list. This only applies to companies that I think are reputable.. .. .Sometimes I get a reply & the website gets changed so I consider it a win. . .. .Obviously if it's the web equivalent of spam or an unknown company it just gets added straight to my restricted sites list.
