I have just treated the Dell to 2gb RAM instead of the 1/2gb it's been running (XP) on since new. It has been recognised in the BIOS and also by FreeRam XP Pro which I have sitting in the taskbar.

Rather disappointed in that it doesn't seem to have speeded up anything except the shutdown!

Any thoughts?

You'll only really notice the difference when you either have multiple applications running or are working with large files.

In both cases, there will be much less paging out to disk - switching between applications should be faster, as more is held in RAM.

Thanks for that.

Only thing I did notice while checking the BIOS is that, while both sets of RAM are 400mhz PC3200 type, it shows 333mhz which doesn't appear to be user changeable. Bit odd?

The RAM can't be driven faster than the mobo can drive it.

Your mobo can only use the RAM at 333 MHz, even though the RAM is rated for higher speeds.
