Plenty of them about, but what's your favo(u)rite?

The 'Lawnmower Blade Balancer' I have just seen advertised qualifies for that - I just use a steel rod or even a round pencil.

A mate of mine used to collect crap like this.

The one I remember in particular was a gadget that scrambled your egg while it was still in its shell.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

A battery-operated duster. I kid you not! It's for dusting delicate things like electronic panels and is made of a "mop-head" of fine fibres. You could easily dust with it (manually) just as it is but no, it actually has a little motor to make the "mop-head" spin around!

My brother has an electric pepper grinder with a light which shines on your plate when the thing is grinding. Whats all that about ???..... OK if you only have one arm and eat alone in the dark :(

When it comes to gadgets, you can't beat those little catalogues that fall out of the Sunday Papers, full of all things you never knew you wanted or needed! I love those!

There is no such thing as a "pointless gadget". The whole idea of a gadget is to be pointless...

I don't think you'd survive Dragons Den with that presentation :)

Got one of these the other day:

pretty handy for rewinding DVD's before returning them to the video store

http://i35.tinypic.com/280o3td.jpg

Sturdy base, DVD and MP3 modes, aural alert to let you know it has finished rewinding. value for money.

If they're really a gadget, doesn't that mean that they're pretty much pointless?

The pontil, or punty, is a solid metal rod that is usually tipped with a wad of hot glass, then applied to the base of a vessel to hold it during manufacture. It often leaves an irregular or ring-shaped scar on the base when removed. This is called the "pontil mark."
Gadget: A metal rod with a spring clip that grips the foot of a vessel and so avoids the use of a pontil. Gadgets were first used in the late 18th century.

Pointless gadget No. 1,034....

Rain-sensing windscreen

Who needs them? People who can't see it's raining? It's the same genre as motorway signs saying FOG, or SPRAY

All of the above comes from a QVC addict:D:D

QVC is very useful. How else would Mrs G. fill up empty cupboards?

Rain-sensing windscreen
Who needs them?
Disagree - mine will sweep only when the screen is damp enough and doesn't judder across a dry screen. More wet it moves from intermittent to constant low speed, but will move on to higher speeds as the deluge demands.
One less thing to think about . . .

Nowadays I drive solely to get from A to B.

My rain sensing windscreen is a pain. I go through a tunnel every day that's ooh about a quarter of a mile long.

What happens is by the time I get to the end of the tunnel, it's worked out that there is no rain...just in time for me to re-enter the rain, whereupon it takes another 30 seconds to work out it's raining again. Grrr! Useless gadget!

No problems on my Peugeot . . .
Can't you just flick the lever to start the wipers again, anyway?

Parapunter
30th Aug 2008, 20:36
Yep, but that rather defeats the point of the gadget! Doesn't matter, I traded it in for another Teuton last week.

Now I have a fairly pointless permanent four wheel drive system.

We rented a small Peugeot about seven or eight years ago on a trip to the UK. It had rain sensing for the wipers. Uselerss gadget, I said to Mrs CVJ. By the time we relinquished the car it was up there with elecvtric windows.

The other day driving down to Vancouver on our "In the process of $800M upgrade and filthy" road and intermittent rain I was just wondering why my expensive car did not have rain sensing. Turn them on, turn them off, Up a click, up a click, down a click. The wipers needed my constant attention.

Far from a useless gadget.
