I heard the rumours a few months ago, but thought nothing of it, but just been reading the NZ herald who stated that Cathay will replace the Airbus with 747 to Auckland in October, does anyone have some inside goss on this?

"Other carriers were increasing their capacity, including Cathay Pacific which would use a Boeing 747 to replace a smaller Airbus from October and Pacific Blue's growing number of flights across the Tasman."

CX has often in the past used the 744 on the AKL route for a month or two late in the year.

I suspect that is what is happening here. If it is planned to be a permanent thing then good question, where is the bus going to go?

So what happens to the Bus based guys in Auckland? Will the 747 only be used when there are 2 AKL flights a day?

OK to clarify what is going on. Currently CX operates ten flights a week to AKL, i.e. CX117/118x3 (A340) & CX107/108x7 (A340). As of October the winter schedule kicks in and AKL goes to fourteen flights a week, i.e. CX117/118x7 (A340) & CX107/108x7 (Equipment Variable). The company at this stage are planning to use the B744 on 107/108 for the winter schedule. There are no plans at this stage to take the A340 off AKL even though CX in my opinion has sc***d up by taking first class off the route when all the competitors offer it.

As far as the A340s are concerned, it seems that starting in the winter schedule, CX will use A340s on CX105/104 (HKG-ADL-MEL-HKG) and the new CX157/156 (HKG-BNE).

PER is showing EQV so I'm not sure if they'd switch it to 340s or stick with the 330s.
