Tropical Storm Fay turned out to be a big rain event for Florida, the Florida Today events log has an interesting entry for Melbourne Airport.

12:57 p.m.: Catfish, snakes litter Melbourne Airport runway
Delta Air Lines today resumed regularly scheduled service at Melbourne International Airport, but some flights may be delayed because of weather from Tropical Storm Fay, according to airport officials.

The airline operates five regularly scheduled flights daily out of Melbourne International.

For updates on flights, check with Delta or with the airport at Melbourne International Airport - travel to Port Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center, beach and Orlando theme park attractions on the coast of Florida.

Airport staffers had to remove several animals from a taxiway and runway in this morning’s storm.

Several walking catfish, two gopher tortoises, and indigo snake were removed as flights resumed at Melbourne International, said Lori Booker, a spokeswoman for the airport.

An alligator also was on the taxiway, but it eventually returned to a nearby canal on its own, Booker said.

She said the animals apparently were displaced by flooding.

While flights at the city-owned airport resumed, Booker said travelers should expect delays as service is being restored on a “weather permitting” basis
