My computer when first switched on says "operating system not found" but on hitting the reset button boots up normally. This happens evertime. Can anyone tell me why?

"Fishing in the dark" a bit, but I'd wonder if the HDD is a bit slow in spooling up - doesn't "get there" when the system is first switched on, but is up to speed by the time the reset button is pressed - any takers?
Another thing which I have found to cause "strange startup" is a system plugged into a 100volt supply but the switch on the power supply at the back of the system box selected to 220volt. Not sure where you live, Oleo, but if outside Europe this might be the problem.

My hard disk is dying? Woe is me! http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif The PC is only a year old. Mine makes a strange noise too, like the others in the website Icarus suggested. I'll try to get hold of Dell.

BACKUP, BACKUP, DON'T WAIT !
Once you have a backup copy of any files that you need, then if you think the drive might be dying, give it a good "scandisc" (the "thorough" option which does a full read-write test)
"Strange noises" are quite common with drives (I once had a customer who wanted the "latest, fastest, biggest" drive available and then complained that he could hear the head-seek http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/confused.gif ) If they are new strange noises then could be you have a problem.
I have had an HDD which has died on me 12 months from new, it can happen, even though the drive was fine and had no problems until a day or 3 before it finally quit (giving me time to make sure that I had the latest version of most of my data - thank-you!)
