hi i was wondering where pilots usually place their luggages. do they check them in at the counter like the passengers or do they take them along into the flightdeck? thanks in advance. i apologise if this sounded very trivial but i just had to get it out of my system.

Depends on company procedures. I know a lot of US carriers seem to let their crew take all but the kitchen sink into the cabin and if this is the case generally there is a place for a flying case in the flight deck, otherwise they put it somewhere else in the passenger cabin or wardrobes.

Most other airlines the crew can check their luggage. At BA long haul crew can check in luggage for flights at checkin like the customers but it gets loaded separetly!

The adage 'a fool and his bags are soon parted' works for me, so my stuff comes into the flight deck.

For the airlines that I work with at Heathrow ....

On one they have a baggage bin which contains only crew bags. It is offloaded almost first, and then left at the rear of the aircraft; the coach collects the bags, and then the crew when they are ready. On the outbound flight they are delivered to the rear of the aircraft, and then loaded into the First Class baggage bin.

On another one (actually, two others) the bags are loaded loose into the Bulk hold in the rear of the aircraft.

Depends on the operator. Here are my experiences:

1. Load them into the main hold yourself, collect them from same place on landing.

2. Leave them by the bulk cargo hold then either collect them from there on arrival (home base) or pick them up from the carousel outports)

3. Check them in as if you were a passenger.

4. Take them onto the aircraft yourself. Put them where you like (cargo 747 so lots of options). Take them off yourself.

5. Carry own bag on aircrat, stow on flight deck behind seat.

So it varies massively. But generally, long haul you will tend to get them put in the hold, shorthaul with only one or two overnights they can go in the cabin/flight deck.
