It appears the fireworks were fakes.

Those inscrutable Chinese, you have to take your hats off to them.

...... and I now want to see real PROOF that they invented :mad: gunpowder too.

How about real proof of the ages of some of their younger athletes? It appears some of the gymnasts were perhaps either over-age in previous competitions or under-age for the Olympics...

You know, I watched the opening ceremony & couldn't help but think of a poor chap sitting in London, who is responsible for the 2012 opening ceremony, rubbing his eyes & saying, "Gee-zuzzz!!!"

Fake or real...whatever those fireworks were,,,They looked nice..

Lets call them special-effects....and at least give the credit to the guy whom it took an year to produce...:}

Well, at least rest of the ceremony was genuine.....Or wasn't it :eek:

David Copperfield, who'd wangled a premium seat in the stadium, was heard to say "How the f**k...?" as the ceremony unfolded ;)

It appears the fireworks were fakes.

Probably the same group who did the moon landing. :}

I read that the "footprints" were indeed done for real, but the show's organisers felt that they wouldn't be able to film them in such a way as to do them justice, so they CGI'd the TV coverage?

Just as my old Dad said, "Bloody clever the Chinese - all done with smoke and mirrors" ;)

Looks as though the inscrutable Chinese suffer from the same superficial values as the decadent west. If you're less than beautiful, you don't rate.

The sound you hear is Baron de Coubertin rolling in his grave.

For the London 2012 Opening Ceremony there very well maybe a re-enactment of the Blitz..or then again it could be faulty electrics in one of the unfinished stadiums!! :E (How very dark!!)

Fireworks, singers, crowds... so what else are they going to admit faking? The Closing Ceremony handing over the Olympic flag to London and the Chinese say "Only kidding, we'll host it next time, too..."

Mind you, London could fake all sorts of things. Like the transport links and the stadia being finished on time!!

London won't be outdone here...they'll probably get Chas n Dave ( they couldn't sing either ) and Barbara Windsor to mime "Gord save the Queen" :E

The cyclists apparently didn't pass through the Great Wall of China either. Was just a computer image...:eek::}

If you're less than beautiful, you don't rate.

Well there was Sarah Brightman in the opening ceremony and Sue Barker is presenting every day in glorious HD :(

I'm not surprised the singer who originally recorded the opening song wasn't present, she's working overtime in the fireworks factory :E

Beijing Olympics: 'Ethnic' children exposed as fakes in opening ceremony (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2561979/Beijing-Olympics-Ethnic-children-exposed-as-fakes-in-opening-ceremony.html) Another section of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony has been exposed as faked - the children supposedly representing the country's 56 ethnic groups were in fact all from the same one, the majority Han Chinese race.

Slight thread drift but I was curious to see what the medal table would look like when you took the relative sizes of each country into consideration.

The current (15th August) medal table, based on total medals won, is as follows :

Ranking Country
1 China
2 USA
3 Germany
4 South Korea
5 Italy
6 Japan
7 Australia
8 Russia
9 France
10 Great Britain

If you divide the total number of medals by the total population of the country it is :

Ranking Country
1 Australia
2 South Korea
3 France
4 Italy
5 Germany
6 USA
7 Russia
8 Great Britain
9 Japan
10 China

A crude measure but interesting results either that or I must get out more :(

Not watching the Olympics, except by accident on the News, I have only recently seen the little girl doing the miming.

For several seconds I thought she was a computer generated image.

I know Beijing is fish and chip wrappers now, except for those deformed people who are currently doing something over there, but I couldn't help revisiting those magnificent Olympics with a reminder from a thread I now cherish.

Its just dawned on me - The fake fireworks were intentional - Its the old Proverb - A journey of a 1000 lies starts with a single fake step.

Bye.
