Target is to raise £1m for the support of wounded servicemen and women
Twickenham Stadium will be hosting a challenge rugby union match featuring rugby stars from around the world aimed at raising over £1m for Help for Heroes, the charity that provides support for the Servicemen and women wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq. Help for Heroes is raising money to help improve facilities and services at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court and the NHS Hospital, Selly Oak.
The match, to be played at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, September 20th will feature two teams, a Help for Heroes XV and an International Select XV who will play a challenge match at the home of English rugby.

Former England Captains, Phil de Glanville (ex-Bath Rugby) and Lawrence Dallaglio (ex-London Wasps) will act as Team Manager and Captain respectively for the Help 4 Heroes XV with Welsh Rugby legends, Ieuan Evans and Scott Gibbs filling the same roles for the International Select XV. The teams, which will be announced in due course, are expected to include a composite of players from the Guinness Premiership, National Division One, the Magners League, overseas stars and the Armed Forces.
The idea for the fund raising game belongs to Mark Souster a journalist for The Times.
Mark Souster says: “I’m sure there are millions of people like myself who feel that we owe a huge debt to the brave service men and women who serve in areas of conflict like Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Injuries and death are an inevitable but very sad fact of war and it is essential that those who are hurt are given the best possible care and rehabilitation. The medical staff at Headley Court already do a fantastic job and the revenues raised from the game will help them provide even better facilities and care for injured troops and military staff.”
Help for Heroes was started in October 2007 by the cartoonist Bryn Parry and friends who wanted to do something special for the men and women of our Armed Forces.
RFU Business Operations Director Paul Vaughan said “We’re honoured to be hosting the game and all the revenues will go to Help for Heroes.
“This is a great opportunity for the whole Rugby family to get together and demonstrate its support for our Armed Services personnel who are doing such a great but dangerous job. We are pleased to donate Twickenham and our management support for free and our aim is to hit the £1m target.
“Tickets for the game have been priced very competitively with prices ranging from £30 and £20 for adults and £15 and £10 for U16s and they are available now from Ticketmaster.”
We are also seeking sponsors at a variety of levels to cover the costs of staging the day. If you or your company are interested in learning more about this, please contact us. (http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/rugby_contact_us.html)
'The opportunity for injured personnel from the armed forces to be able to receive treatment and rehabilitation amongst other military personnel is absolutely essential to morale.</EM>
Therefore, any initiative that raises money for the services, especially Headley Court, has my absolute full support.
The culture and atmosphere around Headley Court is superb. I have friends who have gone through there as patients and staff, and what they do is vitally important for patients morale, mental wellbeing and physical recovery.'

All our service personnel do a superb job and I hope that as many people as possible come along to watch the game and that a large amount of money is raised to help those who have been injured serving their country.
The money raised will help our wounded servcie men and women speed up their recovery as a result of new facilities that will be added at Headley Court.'

"match ball will be delivered by a Chinook" - hold on to your pies and crisps then! I think a A109 or lynx might be more suitable......;)

I have heard that Ticketmaster have only made lower tier tickets available. Does anyone know if this is true and if they are planning to open up the middle and upper tiers? I hope so, as a large crowd is expected (the Army Vs Navy game gets 45,000!

Lets all make the H4H fund some more dosh by getting everyone not on ops to go, thereby providing a capacity crowd of 37. Oops sorry, forgot the other 100,000 who never seem to deploy......:ugh:

Fantastic idea. Will be like the good old days of Army-Navy days when rugby was amateur so some of the internation team would play for the services.

I have passed the link to the board of the company i work for urging them to take interest
