'Hey that's my old car!' Is what I said to myself, when sitting in the barber's shop chair in town one Saturday morning, as my first ever car drove past.

Where have you seen one of your oldies before?

No, but I've seen the opposite. I once saw my (back then) own car on TV, staring at me through the open door of a cottage during an episode of Inspector Morse.

My first motorbike, a 1964 BSA 250 is still around, according to the DVLA, as is my first car, a 1967 Singer Gazelle VI but I've never see either for over 30 years.

At a show a year or two ago.

The owner offered to sell it (1967 Morgan + 4 Tourer) back to me. Not a chance! Not a chance! That heap must have cost successive owners a multiple of perhaps 10 times its original purchase price in tolls paid to Ray R****** Auto Care to keep it going. Ray has long since retired, mainly I believe on the proceeds of that Morgan. Gotta tellya: The Chev Caprice two-door hardtop V-8 307 with automatic and air was a FAR better car!

One of my 'old cars' is presently in an on-line auction though one would hardly recognise it from the glowing description given by the hopeful vendor!

Yes, con, when I lived out West I had a client who had six cars in his barn .... his current BMW plus its five BMW predecessors, all of them 7 series, as I recall.

Where I grew up each farm retained all the machinery that was ever purchased, every make and model of tractor imaginable parked under the macrocarpa hedges and a row of harvesting machinery back to a Cyrus Hall McCormack original!

I saw my Lotus Elite, (original fiberglass monocoque model circa 1960), for sale years after I sold it. It had been repainted from the BRG to red and the original Coventry Climax engine had been replaced with a Datsun 510 engine. This was because a piston had broken and I am guessing that the owner could not get a replacement.
I had just bought a boat so did not have the cash but that car has always had a place in my heart even if it was the most prone to breakdown car I ever owned. It should only be owned as a part time toy.

I saw my dad's old (1977) Austin Allegro in a Tesco's car park, some 150 miles and twenty years after he first drove it shiny and new from the showroom. (And no, I've no idea know what must have possessed him at the time...)

Funny, had a call yesterday from a guy who had bought my 2000 LR Disco and wanted to know if I was still in the possession of one of the rear folding seats. Answer no.
I owned that car for three months, not the biggest piece of crap ever, that honouur belongs to the previous car, a 1998 LR Disco, but a good second.

Often wonder what happens to cars that I've traded in. First one was an Allegro :\ though I traded that in in Coventry the day before I moved back to Manchester It was a rusty heap, so not surprised I never saw it again, though having paid 270, and got 800 trade in 18 months later I can't complain even if it did use a pint of oil every 100 miles if it went over 40mph.

Subsequent 3 cars have all been traded in in the area I was living, so you would think there would be a fair chance of seeing them around after they had been sold, but never have. Do car dealers send trade ins to the other end of the country to avoid subsequent embarassment?

Your Allard (or more accurately, one rather like it!) was very nearly mine in 1962. It was a type K1, I think, and it looked great in the window of a now-defunct sports car dealer in New Cross, London. Price on the windscreen was 150, which I could just afford, so in I went. The salesman advised me to get a few insurance quotes first, sensible man.

Premiums were sky-high, of course, for a 23 year old without any insurance history...... So I bought a 1949 Hillman Minx instead, with full-width front bench seat and steering-column gear change, and insurable for about 15 or so. Had great fun with it, but I still hanker for that Allard!

I sold an 18year old Marina which I hadn't driven over 55 mph for years as it shuddered violently. A couple of weeks later it overtook me on the M27 and I accelerated to see how fast it was going. I gave up at 90 mph. The next morning it overtook me again, just the same. I never saw it again.

Chap in the next office sold a Mk 2 Aston Martin for 450 when he was going through RAF training in the 70s. He found it again last year and bought it back for 40 grand (well, he is Spec Aircrew!).

My Dad had a Lea-Francis (called Phyllis) when he was at university. When he met Mum she insisted he get rid of it because it messed up her hairdo. Dad very reluctantly sold it in 1952, and saw it again at a vintage car rally 50 years later, in the same condition but worth several decimal places more than he sold it for.... He still keeps a framed photo of Phyllis in his study.

This said, I had the use of one through work for a couple of months in the early '80s, a pageant blue automatic estate. It was the most tail-happy standard car I have ever driven. Totally benign full opposite-lock slides, wet or dry, at any speed you like, a complete hoot. The strange, bonded rubber outer supports for the rear semi-trailling arms were almost non-existent when I'd finished; it made no difference whatsoever! I guess Red Robbo and his guys had an off-day when they built this one; it was tough.

I've been lucky to own many nice vehicles, but most of the real memories are of the old nails and the weird ones...

Yep, I'd swap my hot car for a good example of the Wolsely above. I would get certified by 'er indoors, but it would be my ideal for wobbling down to the pub while in the UK.

Mind you, I'd have to be sure that I wasn't going to have a punitive RFL to pay for having an old smoker.

As the proud owner of only four cars and three motorcycles in my time. I'm pretty sure of the fate of most of them by now. Two bikes I know were scrapped Which is now a cause of regret for my old RD350LC. Which I surely should have simply disassembled ready for the time when I would rebuild it. :ugh: Anyone got an old Elsie they want rid of?

My first car was a 1980 Mini which I sold to two teenagers who wanted to restore it. I saw it again immediately because they parked it outside my house so their parents wouldn't find out they bought it. My second was a Suzuki Swift which suffered the twin ignominy of being squished between a Transit and a Polo and then traded as a scrappage deal for my first and only new car. A blue Fiat Punto. Well it was all I could afford really. I eventually sold it to my future sister in law, who proceeded to sell it to another sister. So it was always hanging around one way or another. My wife's family have a habit of circulating cars within the family. I can't wait to get my hands on the bruv in law's Lexus:ok:
Finally the Punto left the family but I still see it. Gradually deteriorating, scratched, with missing foglights and obvious front end damage. My poor old car.:{ The owners must be paranoid by now as everytime I see it I point it out. I've got some funny looks in return. I still harbour a small propriatorial attitude to it, after all I had it when brand new out of the box.

But my wife's family has the best seeing your old car again story. Yet another sister had yet another blue Fiat Punto. It was crashed and written off, replaced by yet another blue Punto. Sometime later another sister who lives on the other side of the country (I married into a big family, my wife has six sisters) was in the market for a car. The dealer told her about a car he had just restored for his 'daughter' :suspect: Yes, it was the crashed one. She bought it of course. At one point family reunions looked like a Fiat dealers convention.

My first car was really only a share in a car, a share in several cars in fact. It was during my period of 'Basic Training' when several of the lads decided to buy a car. Our first purchase was a 1930 6 cylinder De Soto, when it blew a head gasket we immediately bought another car, a 1930 Plymouth 4 cylinder though otherwise very similar to the De Soto. About that time someone on the aircraft engines course made us a head gasket for the DeSoto so we had two cars. We had more than once towed another Plymouth back to base after it refused to start for its owners and when they left they offered us the Plymouth which was exactly the same as ours. They also gave us their 'spare' car which was a 1926(?) Pontiac but we never got it on the road as one wheel (wooden spoked) had collapsed!:(

So five of us had two Plymouths and the De Soto to drive around in and every car had a fold down front seat that matched up to the rear seat cushion producing a rather spacious 'bed'. Other young lads used to pay us flagons of beer to borrow our cars!:eek:

Not long before the end of our training one Plymouth run a big end and it was decided to drive it back to base regardless of the noise. About 100 yards from the main gate there was a sudden change in noise as the big end gave way and the whirling crank shaft whacked it out through the side of the engine block. We pushed it back to the car park leaving a trail of sticky black sump oil behind us. Next weekend our resident McGuiver disconnected another big end and removed the piston so the engine was back in balance, then he did something so the valves of the two non-functioning cylinders did not open and screwed a tin patch over the hole smashed in the sump. The car ran well and could still manage almost 50 mph. That Plymouth had the best body and a very good paint job and we were very pleased to sell it to the next batch of recruites for I think five quid, the other two cars went for a crate of flagons each.

My first real owned by me entirely was a 2 1/2 litre Riley RM of 1952. Bought it on a Wednesday, raced a Vauxhall on the motorway on Friday and on Saturday started my lifetime hobby of fixing things I have broken.:sad:

Having had a large number of cars (& a good few bikes) through my hands, it's nice to see your old vehicles but only when they are in a half decent/as you remembered them state. It is rather depressing to see a once loved vehicle that left you in superb order that is now a minging pile of abused junk, this has happened to me on a good number of occasions and I always think in such a case it's better to never see them again. Such was the case with my first 205GTi and my Lancia Inte.

corsair: good luck in finding an Elsie, they're quite pricey now - even the rough ones. I got pulled by the cops on my 350YPVS last month, I asked what was wrong, the cop looked sheepishly at me and said 'Nothing at all, I've been looking for one of those in superb order for ages, erm, I don't suppose you're thinking of selling are you?', I've had the thing for 16 years, so the answer was a polite 'No, sorry'.

The father of a schoolfriend had a huge Mercedes open tourer dating from about 1937/8 with a supercharger mounted just in front of the radiator grille.An American airman based near here had brought it back from Germany just after the war and my friends dad said that he had stolen it.
He paid 250 for it when the guy was posted back to the states and the shipping costs were more than he could afford.He sold it around 1960 for about twice what he paid. My guess is that it would now be worth towards a million.
