Hi everyone

I really need some help and above all, some advice on this.

I switched on my PC this morning, and immediately noticed various problems:

- Slow startup
- occasional blue screens
- Occasional startup in safe mode

When I go into control panel > system, there is the following error on both the Primary IDE controller and secondary IDE controller:

"Either this device isn't present or isn't working properly. Try upgrading the driver and try again"

I tried updating the driver but the system says I already have the latest.

Other error message is when I click on the performances tab:

"C drive is using MS-DOS compatible system file mode. The paging of the compatibility mode is reducing the overall performance"

For information, there was a storm during the night. It woke me and I unplugged the pc from the mains, but could have been a bit late.

I really would appreciate your advice as to how to recover from this problem.

My config
---------

Pentium II 233 Mhz
224 MB of SDRAM
Primary IDE: 8 GB seagate hard disk (master) and cdrom (slave)
Secondary IDE: Philips CDrom burner (master)
ADSL modem connected to USB port via USB hub.
SOundblaster 16 on ISA slot
Windows ME

Help !!

Update:

I found the following article on the microsoft pages:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q13 0/1/79.ASP (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q130/1/79.ASP)

I followed the instructions and both errors have now disappeared.

The computer still appears to be behaving a bit strangely. I'll keep an eye on things and be back with more questions if necessary !
