Absolutely in a class of your own, Ned. There might not be many who get the chances you do, but there certainly aren't many who make the most of those chances the way you've shown here. Fantastic.

Stunning ned.

Particularly like the SA Hinds. Are they locally modded/upgraded?

My formation shots never seen to come out like these!!

Nice Skyhawk pic:ok: Was that shot in Australia or NZ?

Ned-Air2Air
21st Jul 2008, 00:54
Marly Lite - They are highly modified Hinds done by ATE Aerospace in South Africa. From what I understand they have already sold some to Algeria. The new MK IV will have composite main rotor blades and I think tail rotor blades as well possibly new engines.

Trojan - The pics were shot in NZ. I had the chance to be one of the last media flights before our asshole Govt (soon to be gone :ok: ) disbanded them. The land in the background is the bottom part of North Island after we took off from Ohakea and then rounded the corner and beat up the Cook Strait Ferry :)

Had no choice getting up early when I was visiting KAF as the bloody Dutch F-16s would head out at first light in full afterburner. The compound where we were staying was the Dept of State compound just over the round from there the Mi-26 usually parks, same place where all the Hueys are :)

Will see what other pics I can find.

SHJ - I went down and spoke to the crews flying it and they said they were there doing geological surveys of some sort for the Afghan Govt looking for mineral deposits etc. That was backed up by the news reports I saw also.

Agreed - you get paid to do this ?

Best job on the planet if so.

Superb pictures. Thx for sharing - love the inverted T-38 shot - the area ruled fuse almost gives the aircraft a feminine form wearing a dress (personal note: must stop taking those red pills)

The self portrait (and low level inverted shot) - what aircraft was that ? :8

I'm thinking Tornado but this doesn't seem quite right from the mirror shot looking back.
Mirage perhaps ?

621Andy - On those trips I was using a Canon EOS 1DS MKII but have recently upgraded to the 1DS MK 3 and its an awesome camera :ok::ok:

Also the Chinook rear gunner shot you like was sitting on the back ramp of an Australian Army 5 AVN Regt Chinook. We were coming back from TK to KAF and it was awesome.

Yes, but what was the FJ please ?

Ned-Air2Air
22nd Jul 2008, 08:47
Kluge - I think the shot you are referring to is a flight I did where I got to fly in the front seat of the Mirage 2000-5 with Dassault Test Pilot Claude Martin in the back seat. That was right at the end of the day during Day 2 of the Paris Airshow a few years back. Thats the Le Bourget runway you see. :)

When Liz 1 locked up Mary in the tower her jailer was extremely protestant in his views and considered luxeries such as jam to be unecessary and ungodly. Mary had developed a taste for a bitter orange jam (during her time in spain) and this was sent to her as a medicine. The unsophisticated palate of her captors thought that the stuff was disgusting and was for Ma'ams Malady - hence Marmalade.

Hope that helps (I've waited years for someone to ask that question)

One question, on the first pic of the Apaches, where is that? is it West Virginia/Appalachians?

Ned,

Simply outstanding. The way you talk about the F16s at early o'clock brings me right back to KAF. My pics (via a Dutch Combat Camera Photog who was working with us) are ground based but, like yours, it showed me how important composition is rather than point and shoot.

However, pointing and shooting got me a couple of good ones when I flew with the Reds. All luck!

Depends what I am shooting by my normal air to air lens for helo is a 70-200 2.8L Canon lens and inside the jets it was a fixed 100m but I would take a 28-80 with me as well.

Hey Ned,

How much direction do you/can you give, if any, to your driver, to line up the formation shots so well? Or do you just have to shoot what you see?

Cheers

P1

Ned-Air2Air
24th Jul 2008, 06:44
Depends if you are talking the fast jets or the helos.

With the military aircraft, either helo or fixed wing, I have to be honest and say they are 100% much easier to do an air to air shoot with as they are trained in formation flying, and have no problem flying tight formation as you can see in some of the shots. Even images such as the shot of the underside of the T-38 where we were doing a barrell roll, that was taken with a wide angle lens and it still filled the frame.

But saying that when I have done some air to air shoots with ex mil pilots flying civillian machines you can usually get really good pics.

When I am flying with pilots I dont know, and who havent necessarily got a military background, I try to fly with the most experienced pilot in the group and then we fly around the other helo, letting them to the turns etc or shadow them.

I also try to keep giving as much feedback to the pilot of the camera ship that I am flying with, such as up a little, back, hold that, great position, now lets go up a bit, keep going up, good, hold that, see the sight picture I am trying to get, great, then hold that for a sec. Etc. You would be surprised how quickly they understand what you are trying to get and what you see when you "show" them.

Ned,absolute crackers, but I`m surprised you didn`t claim the one in cloud was done whilst your driver was `plugged-in` refuelling, in the middle of a barrel-roll, assuming it was `Kiwi` crews,or was it just in a hangar with scenic-smoke? Great photos...Syc..

Fox3Snapshot - Why hide the pics away for no one else to see, thats not the reason we shoot pics, we shoot them to show off this amazing industry :)

Ned,

I am very curious as to how you manage to get rides in all these a/c types. Can I assume that your fame precedes you?

Wonderful stuff. Many thanks!:ok:

121Club - It was very simple - I just asked :ok:

Over the years I have been both a contributor to various magazines up until today where I own and publish a number of my own. If you get a reputation as being pro armed forces instead of like the main stream media where they constantly attack them, then a lot of doors open.

Here are some shots of the various types I have got to fly in.

F-15s at Tyndall AFB
