Heard an interesting rumour recently about someone who cheated on their ATPL exams. Said pilot printed out their AIP's however included an extra chapter here or there that looked identical to the real chapters but contained all of his workings, study notes and graphs etc.

Also heard about someone who wrote all the requried forumla's between the lines in their VFG for the PPL.

Is this common practice? Has anyone seen anything similar?

I'm not sure how these people could feel proud of their achievements if this is the case. I wonder how long it would take for the guilt to wear off?

Cheating in these exams demonstrates two very undesirable qualities in a pilot: laziness and lack of confidence.

Should have their licence taken away. Although if caught and went on a record, surely no employer would consider such a personality.

Not sure what happens these days but when I did my exams the exam monitor would stroll around thumbing through all your documentation. You would be pretty unlucky to get caught though if you had done it properly.

End of the day it won't make that much difference as you can't notes into the exams you really need them, like systems etc

I think we've all heard of these things... but I'm sure these people are few and far between... I think anyone trying that is quite stupid, because if you got caught out the reprocussions are pretty harsh and if you were to do this on the 15 odd exams (7 CPL, 7 ATPL & IREX) you're really wearing down your odds.

These people also will unlikely pass an interview when they get asked stuff about say AIP 1.5, and are ripping themselves off if they don't know the in's and out's of duty times. Not to mention possible incorrectly loading an a/c and turning themselves in to a lawn dart.

I know people who have done this. I ask them after their exams whether they used their notes, the reply is almost ALWAYS, "nope, didn't use them at all".. I guess all the scamming/cheating techniques were enough for them too pass with out looking it up.

To me, seems like a lot of RISK for the return if you ask me.

Proud to say that I got through my 17 exams without cheating,

P.s. heard of one extreme case that someone reduced all of a well knowns set of notes into A5 and stuck them into their AIP!! Bit of a myth, but like anything in this crazy world - if you can think of it, it's probably been done!

at a certain ASL exam centre in country NT, it wasn't an uncommon practice to see fella's walk into the exam with their AFT notes in place of the reg's..

Yes, when airline pilots do their gruelling preflight planning calculations, they are not allowed access to notes.

I know of a pilot who did the AIP cheat page thing in 2004 on his ATPL's. He still failed all of them! :{

If you go to that much effort to put notes to A5 size and make it look like aips, i thought it would be the same amount of effort to study the subject.

In my day the square protractors had a surface designed for pencilled notes. Flat on a desk the writing was invisible.

Or so I was told!

Chatted with more than two dozen mates and colleagues that went for Jetstar interviews 2006-present. Asked how did the interview go, frequent comment was.... no technical questions!

Can visualise the holes in the cheese lining up. New pilots doin self studying or cram courses. No checking of candidate documents for cheat sheets in exams. Loss of experience and good supervision in entry level jobs. Quick progression from first job to jets. Jet operators not even asking technical questions at interviews - touchy feely behavioural interview techniques are the fad.

The standards have dropped. Not just the technical and skills standards, but the personal standards. Cheating? Whatever works, baby.

How often do any of you use some of the sh*t they asked you for ATPL? Not sure about aussie but my missus is still being asked the same stuff i was asked in my exams over 6 odd years ago. Still charging nearly 200 bucks for the privilege though.

It's a box ticking exercise in my opinion, pass the exams in what ever way you can and learn important stuff online.

Exams dont show how proficient you are on the flight deck. I would much rather be with a dip sh*t who has got no ATPL's but knows his/her sop's and can handle a plane rather than someone with all the subjects and no hand skills.

ASL is just a money hungry monopoly:=

Fly real fast I couldn't agree more, it all comes back to $$$ with ASL and box ticking. :ugh:



Good times though, red bull and all nighters will get you through any ATPL! :ok:


I've seen it all though including a foreign airline student sleeping and nearly snoring next to me during the exam :zzz:

As to what goes on in some exams centers use your imagination! :eek:

I saw someone eat an en-route chart in an exam, once.

Some of those exams take a long time, and you don't get lunch breaks, so people get hungry. Having Jeppesen charts instead of AIP is an advantage, because Jepps are printed on rice paper, which is far more nutritious than the rather solid pine paper AIP maps are printed on.

Back in the early days 1990 I was with an asian airline intake they all sat the final exam for the commercial and every one of them got the same mark it surprised me.:bored:

Nothing to do with cheating but a wonderful tale about exams ... back in the olden days at Ansett, it was related that one of the bosses (AJ - as I recall) who was a bit of a swot during engineering courses got set up good and proper for the exam.

Evidently the exam, as handed out to the folk being done, consisted of not one, but two papers .... a "special" one for Al and the normal one for the rest of the boys.

Needless to say, Al was a bit bewildered to see all the other guys finishing their papers with comparative ease while he was struggling through his (very difficult) paper ..... don't know whether the training school folk even let on to him after the exam that he had been had good and proper ....
