Does anybody know what's about to happen after 01-01-2009, when European crews will have european contracts, being paid in €?
Salaries, taxes: is something going to change?

..people employed and based in europe will have their salaries taxed at source and the employer will pay the government(s)...just like they should have been doing for the last 10 years.
amazing how a little multi-million fine can bring companies into line!

OUCH.... Seems like Cathay has been bringing the salaries down to equate with "aftertax" at other majors. Kinda like the ME. Now that all the guys are going to have to be "onshore" and paying the going Euro rates at generally 30-50 percent, its gotta make some question if Cathay is desireable anymore. Tough to make ends meet in Europe these days. Maybe you can commute to the US or Canada and change your money. 1.6 now... LOL.

Cathay Pathetics payscales in Europe after tax of whatever, 30-60% is still competitive - unfortunately. Who cares anyways, right. Like all other things. Money talks - bull**** walks. If the moneys not good enough - the jockeys will not come - will they. Or maybe they join because they want to take advantage of the companys excellent training reputation and then bugger of.. hmmm.. :}:ok:

That's because you asked the right man, Mr.Q.

Yeager doubles as both our recruitment manager and flightcrew ambassador; a spokesman for everything that is positive about Cathay Pacific.

I thought Yeager was extracting the urine.... part of that "world famous" Danish sense of humour we hear too much about...;)

Mr Q

In both answer to and in amplification of Yeager's comments, we have perhaps one of the worst training systems in aviation. Some would say that it's the training staff's fault but apart from the usual minority of dinosaurs and God Complex sufferers, I find most of the trainers helpful and proactive.

The problem lies in the lack of real recurrent training, especially for DEFOs. One is hired on the ability to get on and self study in order to pass through the various hoops. As a result, our command course is at least 10 weeks long because it's the first time that one has had intensive training and the company has had a chance to really assess your abilities. Even then, some say it's more of a "supervised experience" course where little training is given and the candidate is deemed suitable if he or she hasn't made a major mistake in the past 20 sectors. However, that's a little negative and my friends who have recently moved into the left seat are surprisingly positive about their experiences.

Our training consists of 2 simulators each year which are essentially canned exercises that you study in your own time. Couple that with being relief qualified (deputy captain) on a base outside HK and you will be regularly butting up against the requirement to average a sector per month. This truly isn't flying.
