ETIHAD PLACES FIRM ORDERS FOR 45 BOEING AIRCRAFT

Etihad Airways announced today firm orders for 45 Boeing aircraft at the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK. The list price for the order is more than US $9 billion.

The Abu Dhabi-based national airline of the United Arab Emirates has signed contracts for:

35 B787 aircraft. The engine type is subject to further discussions10 B777-300ER aircraft, powered by GE90 engines

There are also options for a further 25 Boeing 787s and 10 Boeing 777s. In addition, Etihad Airways has agreed purchase rights for a further 10 Boeing 787s and five Boeing 777s. Aircraft deliveries will begin in 2011 and be completed in 2020.

Etihad Airways’ chairman His Highness Dr Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan and Etihad chief executive James Hogan announced the order.

James Hogan said: “This is a momentous day for Etihad Airways and Abu Dhabi. It reflects the strength and pace of economic growth in the Emirate and the integral role Etihad will play in Abu Dhabi’s future.

“That future will see planned investments in infrastructure and projects within the Emirate likely to exceed US $200 billion during the next 10 years, an aggressive tourism push and enormous residential development. We are extremely proud to play a leading role in realising these exciting plans in the years ahead.

“The size of our order also mirrors the rising prominence of the Middle East and its increasing emergence as a new focal point of global aviation. The Gulf is also a natural air bridge between East and West offering the fastest air links for travellers and freight forwarders

A key selection criterion in the deal has been the environmental performance of the aircraft. Mr Hogan added: “The new generation Boeing aircraft we have ordered are amongst the most fuel efficient and will help maintain Etihad’s fleet as one of the youngest and greenest in the sky.”

Boeing chairman, president and chief executive officer Jim McNerney said: “We count Etihad as an outstanding, world-class customer, and congratulate the airline on its remarkable growth. Boeing's commitment to provide the world's most fuel efficient airplanes is clearly demonstrated by both the 777 and 787, and we know Etihad will benefit from the reliability and efficiency these airplanes bring to twin-aisle operations."

Etihad Airways’ chairman His Highness Dr Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan said: “The story of Etihad’s growth has been a remarkable one. At every stage of our short history we have surprised people with the scale of our ambition – and at every stage we have delivered on that ambition.

“This Boeing aircraft order is another major step forward in our journey and will enable us to continue our exciting expansion plans by adding new destinations to our growing global network and fulfil our aspirations of bringing Abu Dhabi to the world.”

Since its establishment in 2003, Etihad Airways has been recognised as the fastest growing airline in commercial aviation history. It serves 45 global destinations currently covering Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and North America and this year is on course to carry six million passengers.

So far this year, the airline has started new flights to Beijing in China. August will see Chennai (Madras) and Kozhikode (Calicut) in India, and Minsk in Belarus added to the network. Etihad will also launch new services in December to Moscow in Russia and Almaty in Kazakhstan.

No ' incentives ' to sign for these aircraft of course , Boeing really are the Green choice - this month anyway ? Its all getting a little tiresome , a p***ing contest to see who can spend the most oil-money whilst also competing to see who can shaft their drivers the most ! Good luck guys , you need it. I hear its 300,000 dingbats per annum for a decent gaffe these days ?

Yet Emirates and Dubai are still the big news with their new airline.

Mind you, who's got the oil? Not Dubai.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS BUYS 55 AIRBUS AIRCRAFT, INCLUDING THE A380 AND A350

‘Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has signed a firm contract for the purchase of 20 A320s, 25 A350 XWBs and 10 Airbus A380 aircraft. The agreement was signed by James Hogan, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways and Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO during a ceremony at the 46th Farnborough International Air Show.

“The new generation Airbus aircraft we have ordered are amongst the most fuel efficient and will help maintain Etihad’s fleet as one of the youngest and greenest in the sky. “The size of our order also mirrors the rising prominence of the Middle East and its increasing emergence as a new focal point of global aviation,” said James Hogan.

Today, Etihad Airways’ fleet of Airbus aircraft comprises 30 passenger aircraft with an additional 17 to be delivered from existing orders. Etihad Airways also has two Airbus Freighter aircraft. In taking the latest order for 55 aircraft into account, Etihad Airways’ total Airbus fleet will grow to 104 aircraft.

“We are delighted Airbus’ partnership with Etihad Airways continues to grow. By selecting and ordering the A350, Etihad Airways will have aircraft from the entire Airbus product range. And the additional order for the A380 demonstrates the confidence Etihad places in this unique product. Airbus is rightfully proud that a dynamic airline like Etihad Airways recognises the value of the operational commonality, efficiency and performance that only Airbus aircraft deliver,” said Tom Enders.

The A320 Family, which includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Each aircraft features fly by wire controls and all share a unique cockpit and operational commonality across the range. Around 6,200 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold and more than 3,500 delivered to some 280 customers and operators worldwide, making it the worlds’ best selling commercial jetliner ever.

The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) Family is Airbus’ response to widespread market demand for a series of highly efficient medium-capacity long-range wide-body aircraft. With a range of up to 8,300 nm / 15,400 km, it is available in three basic passenger versions: the A350-800 accommodating 270 passengers, the A350-900 seating 314, and the A350-1000 for 350 passengers in a typical three-class layout. Orders for the aircraft stand at more than 350 from over 20 customers.

Being greener, cleaner, quieter and smarter, the A380 is already setting new standards for air transport and the environment. In addition to offering unequalled levels of passenger comfort, space and quietness in the cabin, the A380 has unmatched levels of operating costs and fuel efficiency, consuming less than three litres per passenger per 100 kilometres.

The A380 not only complies with today’s noise limits, it is also significantly quieter than any other large aircraft flying today. With a range of 8 200 nm / 15 200 km, and seating 525 passengers in a standard three-class layout while being much more eco-efficient, the A380 is the ideal equipment to alleviate traffic congestion at busy airports, while coping with growth.

Orders for the aircraft stand at about 200 from over 15 customers.

Airbus is an EADS company.

What a frigging mess - this is going to be a logistical and maintenance nightmare.

5 different types on top of the A330, and A340 they operate already! - what lunatic thought that a good idea. Crew scheduling and maintenance can barely cope now when swapping a/c due to delays and AOG's gawd knows what they are going to do from 2011.

and...? what's the big deal? You think that EY will collapse when JH quits??!

And where are they going to park all these new aircraft?

Don't worry, they won't come overnight. And...if you have a close look on Google earth, you will see a brand new mid-field terminal under construction.

As for the "nightmare", well, they have at least three years to be ready.
And I almost forgot: FYI, EY operates 4 types already incl. A320 and B777.

Shortfuel, I guess I need to be clearer. In response to the previous post, I was saying that the guys who ordered the planes aren't going to care what happens when they start arriving here and there is no one to crew them or fix them, because they will have long since departed. Also, the airline has had 6 years+ to prepare for the aircraft we have now, and if I am not mistaken, there are more than just a few problems with housing/maintenance/space/infrastructure. So even if the new A/C were going to arrive in 3011 they still wouldn't be ready.

Etihad boosts emirate’s future with $43bn deal
Ivan Gale

Last Updated: July 15. 2008 12:07AM UAE / GMT

FARNBOROUGH // Abu Dhabi’s efforts to become a major global capital by 2030 took a major step forward yesterday with a US$43 billion (Dh157.94bn) fleet expansion plan announced by Etihad Airways.

Deals with Boeing and Airbus for as many as 205 aircraft during the next two decades represent one of the largest civil aviation orders in history.

The purchases will upgrade Etihad from an airline launched just four years ago into one of the biggest in the world – and help transform Abu Dhabi along the way.

The effects of the Etihad order are expected to spread throughout the emirate’s economy, creating new industries and companies in the aerospace sector and bringing tourists from increasingly far flung regions of the world.

A study by the Oxford Business Group, commissioned by Etihad, found that the airline would have a direct influence on the creation of more than 100,000 jobs in the UAE during the next 10 years.

The order “reflects the strength and pace of economic growth in the emirate and the integral role Etihad will play in Abu Dhabi’s future”, James Hogan, the chief executive of Etihad, said yesterday at the Farnborough Air Show in the UK.

A successful expansion of Etihad is one key to realising the ambitious goals that the emirate’s leadership has set: tripling the population by 2030 and the number of tourists by 2015, and increasing the size of its economy by 13 per cent a year by 2010, to Dh584bn.

The push to bring in foreign investment and tourism dollars began only recently. The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and the Tourism Development & Investment Company were started between 2004 and 2005.

A Department of Transport was formed in 2006, while the Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, a master blueprint covering everything from new roads and transport systems to new property developments, was issued last year.

Mr Hogan said the success of Etihad Airways would be an important element in these plans.

The rapid ascent of Etihad is part of a widening shift in the balance of power among the world’s airlines. Gulf carriers have prospered by directing traffic from European and Asian carriers, thanks to ideal locations, lower cost bases and the oil boom.

While Emirates airline is the largest, it is being pursued hotly by Etihad and Qatar Airways, and smaller budget carriers have also thrived. Mr Hogan called the Middle East a “natural air bridge between East and West” that offered the fastest links for passengers and cargo.

As Etihad grows, it is expected to stimulate an emerging aerospace hub in the emirate. A free-zone cluster is planned around Abu Dhabi International Airport, which will see $6.8bn in investments including a brand new terminal that will be four times larger than the current facilities.

Mubadala, an investment vehicle of the Abu Dhabi Government, has identified aerospace as a key element of its mandate to diversify the emirate’s economy away from relying on oil and petrochemicals. It has already signed co-operation agreements with most of the world’s biggest aerospace firms, from Northrop Grumman to EADS, to look for ways to make Abu Dhabi a manufacturing and development centre.

With numerous Abu Dhabi delegations attending the Farnborough Air Show, its starring role in the global aviation industry is expected to be a developing story throughout the week.

Other major announcements are expected from Mubadala, Rolls-Royce, Abu Dhabi Aircraft Company and Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies, the airports operator and aircraft maintenance firms.

Farnborough Air Show: Etihad Airways announces $9.4 billion order for Boeing planes news
15 July 2008

Boeing and Etihad Airways announced an order for 35 787-9 Dreamliners and 10 777-300ERs (Extended Range) at the Farnborough Airshow. The order is valued at $9.4 billion at current list prices.

"The new-generation Boeing aircraft we have ordered are among the most fuel efficient and will help maintain Etihad's fleet as one of the youngest and greenest in the sky," said James Hogan, Etihad Airways' CEO. "The size of our order also mirrors the rising prominence of the Middle East and its increasing emergence as a new focal point of global aviation offering the fastest air links for travelers and freight forwarders."

Launching commercial operations in November 2003, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has grown rapidly to offer service to 45 destinations. It carried 2.8 million passengers during the first six months of 2008, compared to nearly 2 million for the same period in 2007.

"We count Etihad as an outstanding, world-class customer, and we congratulate the airline on its remarkable growth," said Boeing chairman, president and CEO Jim McNerney. "Boeing's commitment to provide the world's most fuel-efficient airplanes is clearly demonstrated by both the 777 and 787, and we know Etihad will benefit from the reliability and efficiency these airplanes bring to twin-aisle operations."

The 787 Dreamliner is forecast to use 20 per cent less fuel than today's airplanes of comparable size.

According to Boeing, fifty-eight customers around the world have ordered nearly 900 Dreamliners since the programme was launched in April 2004, making the 787 Dreamliner the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.

The 777 family of airplanes is the market leader in the 300-to-400-seat segment. The 777-300ER is the world's largest long-range twin-engine jetliner, capable of carrying 365 passengers up to 7,930 nautical miles (14,685 kilometers).
