Does anyone know of the group / air force wing that recovered crashed enemy aircraft during World war 2.

This group then gradually rebuilt the aircraft like the Zero and flight evaluated them against the allied aircraft and learnt how to use the Zeros disadvantages to the allies's advantage.

I did see a program on TV once about this group but cannot remember their name.

This group also standardised on the naming for enemy aircraft (e.g. male names for fighters and female names for bombers).

any details or links would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the outfit you are referring to is the Air Technical Intelligence Unit - South East Asia (ATIU-SEA). This Allied organisation tested and evaluated captured IJA and IJN types.

Some info is to be found on this Web site: ATAIU - Secret Operations at Eagle Farm (http://home.st.net.au/~dunn/usaaf/atiu.htm).

Some photos of types tested are here: Captured J-Aircraft Homepage (http://www.j-aircraft.com/captured/index.htm). I'm sure Google can come up with lots more references.
