View Full Version : Virgin reliability??

I hope that VA is more reliable than Virgin Net - their so-called Internet Service Provider. Why has it had such dreadful connectivity since the 0645 was changed to 0845?? And why is it often slowing down to 21Kb/s even with a 56k modem?? It used to be up in the high 40s - it rarely is now. Then there's today's e-mail server difficulties. Come on Sir Richard, shake the system up!!

Must be something to do with your end BEagle!
I am on Virgin Net and get a connection at 56k every time -and I do mean every time.

Thanks for your info. - I'm currently getting only 38667bps. But I'm still on old-fashioned non-fibre optic landline. Maybe it's just exchange congestion?

I'm rock-solid 49,333 or better with VirginNet and have been for last 3 months or more.

My Virgin connection used to vary between about 38 & 42 kb/s (occasionally 45) but since installing new modem drivers now varies from 44kb to 46kb. I'm close to the centre of London so I presume I have a good phone line.

Looks like it's time to move to Wales or near Zeus' place. Any places available for rent nearby, WWW? eg...next door?

This morning I have 50,667 <again> and apparently Virgin are the only ISP talking to BT about supplying ADSL to this area...

Sure - houses are cheap matey you can have a 7 bedroomed mansion with sweeping views of the Servern Valley for under 30k if you like. For a modest sum I can also supply you with an 'insurance policy' against accidental fire bomb attack...!!!!

BEagle, I should of course have said 54,666bps. (-It is a shame that they limit it!) I have the advantage of being on a relatively new cable company line, which could explain the faster connection.

Interestingly enough if I use the 'old' 0645 number rather than the new 0845 number, both connection success rate and data transfer rate improve immediately!!. Suspect that it's a lack of local exchange capacity which is causing the snag - we'll see what the BT tech support folk have to say!!

How come I only ever get 38 - 40k on Virgin yet 44+ on Global. Is there anything I can do? I've got a 56k modem.

Sorry Virgin!! It turned out to be my Psion Dacom Gold Card 56K+Fax which was at fault!! It finally died altogether a week ago - but thanks to Dell it's now been replaced and I'm back up to 46.7K again. The 0845 access still gets maxxed at times though!!
