PDF/Acrobat problem

Recently I was prompted (can't remember when exactly) to upgrade Adobe Acrobat 6.0 to 7.0. So I did. Unfortunately, now when I click on a PDF (what does that stand for anyway?) file my machines goes funny, and locks up and basically freezes. It never actually opens the file.

Any ideas?

If I remember this was a well know problem somew time ago, and there is an update to fix it.

Either start acrobat reader manually and check for updates, or delete it and download the latest version, which should be 8.1.2

PDF = Portable Document Format.

I use Foxit Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php), it works just as well, launches in less than half the time, and it's freeware!

On one of my systems, version 8x doesn't work, but 7.1 is fine. No rhyme nor reason to it.

Maybe I will try Foxit! Thanks for the suggestion and recommendations.

I tried on download version 9.0, but couldn't as 7.0 was on the system. Restarted and deleted 7.0. Tried again - with apparent sucess. However, wheb I now click on a PDF link, nothing happens, except sometimes I get a message about navigation to the website being stopped.

Edit: It seems to be OK at reading PDF files from the hard drive, but how do I configure it so I can click on links to PDF files and read them?

I wonder if it's a file association problem? Assuming you're using Windows go to Start>>Control Panel>>Folder Options>>File Types and scroll down to "PDF" It maybe that upgrading has altered it. If you click on this entry it will show which programme opens (or not as the case may be) these files. You can change it if needs be.

I've had no problems with 8.0 after some minor installation issues. Tried version 9 but didn't work properly so canned it and went back to 8.something and no more problems.

but how do I configure it so I can click on links to PDF files - I'm pretty sure there is a setting somewhere in Edit/preferences relating to opening web links.

I have found this worked in the past with 'Reader' after an upgrade threw the web links out. Worth a try. I don't know about Acrobat 6/7/9??, I'm only using 5.0!!!

1. In Acrobat or Adobe Reader, choose Edit > Preferences > Internet.
2. Deselect Display PDF in Browser, and then click OK.

I still seem to be having this problem. Left clicking on a link to a PDF file causes the computer to lock/freeze, and it has been like this ever since getting a new motherboard last year. Right clicking on the link and downloading it to the desktop means it can be read. I'm curious as to why this is? Doesn't the machine need to download the same file in both cases?

On a different note, this PC does not have Powerpoint. Can a ppt file be opened using Word or IE or other programs?

[edit] PS, did you "delete" your old Adobe version, or uninstall it? If the former, that's where at least some of the problem lies.

I took your advice and downloaded Foxit for my PDF files. It works great for most things, but I need help with one issue.

I set it as my default reader when I installed it, however when I open a PDF document on the company website it still uses acrobat. Anyone know how to fix this?

My stupidity as usual. The problem was the setup of firefox. Problem solved.

On another note, is there a way to get rid of the "uncontrolled document" printed across the entire page? I do understand the reason for it but it makes studying more difficult.
