A lot of it was around Port Douglas - the helicopter they used was parked there for a while - don't know about the float plane though.

Was filmed around Shute Harbour and Hamilton Island. There were 2 a/c. A flying one from down south and an old derelict VH-LMI done up as a crash dummy. Unfortunately the GBRMPA wouldn't allow it to be 'crashed'. Greenies issue - so I don't think it made it into the movie

The movie registration was "C6967" Obviously a fake...

It was made at Lizard Island not Hamilton Island.

Some of it was filmed at Movie World on the Gold Coast as I saw the aircraft hanging from a crane (obviously for some of the close up shots and special effects).

The aerial and water scenes were filmed in the Whitsundays - up around Grimston Point (about 5nm north west of Airlie Beach).

The flying 206 was one of Akuna's - they got a paint job out of it. I can't remember the rego - the VH stickers were removed for the filming.

Quite interesting watching the stunt man on the float for the take off from YSHR - I thought they'd left a bag on the float. Also interesting was watching the art department making the Wip floats look like the PK's of the wreck. Surprisingly the aircraft had a very matt finish - apparently looks better on film.

Firstly, you guys all saw it, not sure if you enjoyed it but I want the 113 minutes of my life back. And almost positive it was HTO, it was up in Hervey Bay during some of the time of the shooting on Lady Elliot Island

Did anyone catch just how good a pilot Matthew McConaughey is? He managed to fly the aircraft for a couple of minutes with full back stick!

A huge pool was built at Movieworld for this and other movies.
At one stage the aircraft was slung from a crane and from another crane a very large fan was slung, to no doubt spin up the prop or maybe give some effect of turbulence.

This particular Cessna (at Movieworld ) was a prop, as it sat in the back lot for quite some time before eventually being dismantled, e.g wings removed etc, until it was just the fuselage left.

thanks for the replys guys. is the movie that bad?
I have been on a alligator airways floatplane a while ago. I thought it may have been one of the planes from their fleet.
was it a local pilot who did the flying in the floatplane scenes?

It's not a total dead loss but you'd have to be in the mood for harmless light entertainment if you watch it.

This plane belonged to the late Steve Wilson of Gustavus, AK .... He was the stunt double for Mathew.

During the scenes in which McConaughey's character was flying an airplane, he used a stunt double, Steve Wilson, a bush pilot in Gustavus, Alaska. Wilson was on vacation while the filming was taking place and was hired as McConaughey's double. Soon after, Wilson died while piloting his own airplane in August 2007 when the engine failed and sent him and his best friend plummeting into the mountains

Gustavus loses two in Arctic plane crash
Pilot finds teen in the wilderness
GREG SKINNER JUNEAU EMPIRE
Gustavus pilot Steve Wilson, 41, and hunting partner Eric Lochman, 36, died in a small-plane crash while scouting for Dall Sheep above the Arctic Circle on Monday.
The pair left Wilson's 15-year-old son Mickey Wilson at a hunting camp for the 30-minute scouting trip and never returned.
Two days later, a pilot in a passing plane saw the boy signaling from a camp in the Brooks Range, 235 miles north of Fairbanks. The pilot saw the younger Wilson's SOS.
The boy was flow to Fairbanks on Thursday and later was picked up by his grandfather Elden Wilson.
A National Guard search and rescue helicopter found Wilson's plane Thursday. The single engine Maule crashed at 4,000 feet on a mountainside.
"This is a huge loss for Gustavus," said Judy Brakel, a resident of Gustavus. "Steve grew up here."
Elden Wilson said his son had flown and hunted in the area on a previous trip. His son was a licensed pilot by age 18. He always wanted to be a bush pilot, and he flew small planes all over Alaska and the Lower 48, he said.
During a 23-year career, Wilson flew for most of the air taxies in the Southeast. He started Gustavus-based Air Excursions before creating Wilson Air, his recent air taxi operation.
"He was an excellent pilot," Brakel said.
Having grown up in Gustavus, Wilson was considered an old-timer at 41. He was known and liked by most in the community of just over 400.
"He flew just about everybody," Elden Wilson said.
Lochman married into the community and built a small construction company, Brakel said.
"He a was wonderfully talented person," she said.
What caused the fatal crash has not been determined. Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were flown to the crash site Friday as authorities recovered the bodies of Wilson and Lochman.
Elden Wilson said a memorial will be held soon for his son, but no date was set.
"His main thing was flying airplanes and hunting," the elder Wilson said. "He was good at both."

VH-LMI is now allocated to an immaculate Seneca 5 that’s based in Canberra. Flew a few hours in it when I was with CASA a few years ago to keep current.

I think the owner imported it into Oz in about 2010 which would have been a few years after the movie was made.

Currently in Cairns being used by GSL and flying scenic charters out of the airport. Went out on it yesterday and they do love telling you about its involvement in the film.

I believe that I saw an advertisement in the US ,some years ago, for the sale of a plane that was painted in a similar scheme.
It was an amphib and the claim was that it was the one used in the movie ( pictures from the movie included) and I think there was information that it had been flipped and repaired.

I know a lot of people never liked the movie, however I actually did but never told anyone. Sure it wasn't opera grade, and agree it did feature a fair bit of wooden acting.

Then I saw an episode with Bear Gryls and that blonde actress with the nice bum. Bear confessed that it too was one of his favourite movies, as you would with a bum like that.

Speaking of GSL I see some of their Airvans are laid up down at West Sale. Presumably not required at the moment. Pretty sad for all.
