Hey there,
Does anyone know what the latest go is with Air New Zealand? I've heard they're currently doing interviews. Can anyone confirm or provide any other info?

You've heard correctly, there is an interview starting tomorrow (unless it's been put back again!) and another lot have been informed for one in August.
I believe they've been told to not expect starts for some time - prob early in the new year. I hear they are keen to keep a pool of pilots available.

The fuel price and 787 delays have probably slowed things up significantly for hiring and upgrade opportunities.
No indication of lay-offs or the like, the next couple of years aren't likely to be pretty but the company seems reasonably placed to ride out the storm.....but, there are no guarantees in aviation.

Do you think it's a matter of AirNZ "wanting" to build a pool of pilots or them "wanting" to stop the link group pilot drain to outside carriers?

I hear 4 of this weeks interviews are Eagle boys, not sure about the others but would be interested to know how many of each group are Linkers.

Please forward or post the offending evidence there for us Hanz, I've got one (an E-mail) that quite explicitly states the opposite - just University Entrance level education; ie UE/ good 6FCert (if you are of that era!:\)/Bursary or whatever the equivalent NCEA pass is?

Another poor b'stard getting checked, probably simulated engine out, bad weather circuit, doing orbits late downwind waiting to be slotted into the circuit versus traffic in the opposite circuit, listening to the EGPWS go "Dont SINK! Don't SINK!" every couple of seconds because you're not above 700'AGL and undulating terrain under you plus waiting for me and the skipper to backtrack and depart.

Because of this realistic scenario, don't expect priority to land, alone in the circuit with a bit of quiet of the radio so you can mentally keep the emergency drills flowing, hand fly the machine and keep an eye on the "average" non-flying pilot next to you in your B1900.

Mind you WR wasn't much better some days, and that's uncontrolled.

Can confirm- Interviews this weekend and then first weekend of August, which the calls have already been made for. That will probably be it for 2008 unless there are changes to fleet numbers. All new hires will be told to not expect a start until 2009, which will most likely be on 737 or 777. There is an upcoming surplus of pilots so LWOP and downtraining to other fleets is being offered.
A degree is certainly not a requirement, I know of plenty of guys in recent times who have got in without one. Best advice I could offer is to keep updating when you reach milestones.

I agree. The whole system they have is trying to level the playing field and the points are used as a guide, to help them sort applicants, it is not a order of 'must interview'. I have a degree, but I am still told to get more hours, so its made bugger all difference for me, yet(!). Clearly my hours and degree hasn't put me past the level of others with more hours and no degree.
This whole degree thing must have stemmed from someone being told to go get a degree in order to improve their standing on the points table, as an option, along with getting more hours etc. -However, a rumour has been born from it.

Having said all that, do not under-estimate the human influence, the amount of time I have been on their database, and being unfair to others who have been on it longer, was also cited as a reason for not getting there just yet.:ugh:
At the end of the day, its their toy and they can play with it as they want. On the otherside of the coin, gone are the days where Air NZ is the only operator on the block with something to offer.

I think yes they are getting worried with the drain and trying to keep some experienced pilots in place in the Links for the next 6 months or more until they are needed. Pilots leaving the Links and going to Pacific Blue and Qantas has not gone un-noticed I reckon.
Having said that, Air NZ (main) know they are going to be needing some pilots in the future, so its not exactly fruitless, just a bit of a cunning tactic.

From a phone call I made last month to Jetconnect they told me they were awash with Air NZ Link pilots applying 3-4000hrs turbine time...
