Sorry to ask such a lame question but is it definitely OK to carry-on a small bag plus a laptop case on a BA flight from Gatwick?

The info they've sent me says it's possible at "most" Uk airports, but doesn't say which ones.

Thanks.

As far as I know, it is ok to have 2 pieces of hand luggage. You will still need to get the laptop out of the bag to be screened.

Hope this helps.

This rule changed at LHR a few months ago. Did LGW change also?

As far as I'm aware, the reason why you don't have to take your laptop out of the bag anymore at lhr is because they have new fancy all singing, all dancing and all seeing x-ray machines. At lgw we don't have them. When I went through the pax screening area a few night ago, the signs were still there about taking laptops out for screening. Shoe screening is separate as well, after the main bag and body screening.

Most of the "security" staff are still miserable though...

Sorry to ask such a lame question but is it definitely OK to carry-on a small bag plus a laptop case on a BA flight from Gatwick?Definitely OK now, since the end of March 2008.

Can't answer the question about whether laptops have to come out of bags at the screening point, though. Sorry.

Two bags? Not last month it wasn't. We had the largest permitted bags and then had to pack a rucksack and my wife's handbag into them to go through security.

Once through security we repacked and boarded the aircraft with 2 bags each and a carrier with airside shopping. Who is kidding whom?

W2's recent experiene at LGW shows very clearly the utter stupidity of some of the security regs.
Why is LGW still using the stupid and nonsensical one bag through security check point rule when LHR and possibly all(?) other UK airports allow 2 bags through?
Those in charge of security at LGW ought to be ashamed of themselves; in fact they should not be involved in security at all. Please resign and let sensible minded people in charge - if there are any such persons?

As I said earlier, I went through lgw as a pax the other evening (north terminal) we all (5 of us) had 2 pieces of hand luggage each. However I do think the 2 piece rule means a bag of certain size (55x40x20 or whatever it is) and another small item, such as a laptop or handbag. If you turn up at security with 2 large items, I can completely understand why that's not allowed. Most airlines have a 1 item policy anyway, but allow for handbags etc. If someone comes on board one of my flights with 2 large items, I may have to put one of them in the hold. Not because I'm a baggage facist, but because there physically isn't any room in the overhead lockers.

Definitely laptops out at LGW.

And definitely this whole airport security business is a total farce. The politicians and the bureaucrats like it because to the unintelligent, it looks as it something is being done. In reality, there's more holes in airport security than a Gruyere cheese.

It's good for p***sing off aircrew and so reducing safety because of the hassle and aggravation they get, though.

Radeng,

No offence meant, but that's not what we're talking about on this thread. There are plenty of threads about the issue you mention. We're just trying to answer a little question about baggage allowance at LGW.

Thank you.

Well it took me 30 seconds to find the article on the BAA website which says the 'one bag' rule no longer applies at Gatwick. And laptops need to come out of bags.

I think they need a new web designer though - how long is that link?

Why is LGW still using the stupid and nonsensical one bag through security check point rule ...It isn't.

The government restriction limiting passengers to one item of cabin baggage has now been lifted. The size restriction shown below still applies. However, some airlines may still have their own restrictions and passengers are advised to check with their airline for their particular baggage policy.

...

Hand baggage

Passengers may take more than one item of hand baggage through security control, subject to the airline's permission.

Cabin baggage must be no larger than:

56cm (22in) tall
45cm (17.7in) wide
25cm (10in) deep

You should also check with your airline, as some operate further limits on bag size. DfT website (http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity/cabinbaggage):-The Department for Transport has approved new security arrangements at a number of airports in the UK. This means that at these airports the restriction previously imposed limiting hand baggage to one item per person no longer applies. However, airlines apply their own operational policies governing the number of items of hand baggage which may be taken in to the aircraft cabin.

Before departing we strongly suggest you check with your airline on the cabin baggage arrangements for your particular journey.

Airports where the one bag restriction no longer applies are:

Gatwick

So we are all agreed - 2 bags, laptops out.......but don't forget to take off your shoes at the secondary screening point just when you're trying to get your laptop back in the bag.......

Except I managed to completely bypass the secondary shoe screening area last week. There is nothing to stop you walking straight from the first x-ray machine directly into the departure lounge. I wasn't the only person who was doing this.

I wonder if this is a terminal thing?

From South terminal, last month, one bag, no shoe check.
