Have a pretty neat CAD program I'd like to run...but the blurb says I must run it on Windows NT V4.0...and of course my computer is a Windows 98 beast.....any suggestions on the best way to go...upgrade to NT or later?

Go to XP. Going from 98 to NT4 or Win2k is a fresh install, not an upgrade, but XP will do the job and is a reasonably simple upgrade.

but!!!!! W2k is much more stable. And upgrades from 98 are also possible without problems. Also a fresh install is ceratinly a good recommendation

We've obviously had different experiences . .. .XP has been completely stable for me, but so have Win2k and NT4 - unlike 98 and ME. YMMV of course...

Beware of the fact that NT4 doesnt support USB, therefore it proably isnt the best program to load on a home computer.. .. .Mutt.

Hi Mutt- NT4 doesn't support USB???....what do you mean. If I go to XP should I be ok I guess is the question.

You can get 3rd-party USB drivers for NT4 (e.g. here), but I wouldn't bother.. .. .XP and Win2k both support USB, so either is fine.

Oleo

Most modern peripheral devices come with USB connections, scanners, cameras, PDA’s etc. Microsoft designed NT4 without support for USB devices. As Evo7 has stated, there are third part drivers which will solve this problem, but they are expensive. Therefore I would suggest that you went with Windows 2000 rather than NT4.

XP is a nice program for a new PC, but it has problems dealing with older programs, so quite possible that your program wont run on XP.

Good Luck :)

Oleo, if you're counting votes here, I'm another in favour of Win2K. But I might just try installing your CAD App on a Win 98 Second Edition machine first in case it worked.

XP needs a bunch of RAM and HD space that Win2K doesn't. Win 98SE has a 32-bit capability that might just do for you. And it has all the USB capability you need.

NT4 was an OS I grew to know and love, but we've moved on since then.
