Hmm, could be memory related eh? . .. .When you crash, what error do you get, or did it just lock up?. .. .Try swapping the memory boards (I call it that in this case because I don't know what you have in it) around in their slots.. .. .Warm may or may not be a bad indication unto itself, but it's a start.. .. .If you have other memory around you may swap out for known good memory, and retry.. .. .Hope that helps.. . . . [ 25 March 2002, 16:26: Message edited by: RW-1 ]

System just freezes on crashing at various times of usage, and the memory is as follows: 512mb 256mb and 128mb all 133mhz.I tried changing slots but no joy.Could it be just too much memory ? almost 900megs.Presently running XP pro on Athlon 1.2 ghz system.. .I though it may be related to the inability to shut down the system normally through windows. When I try to close down it seems to hang on the final task then freezes.

Think you may be right about too much memory - some motherboards are limited to 512.. .. .Try only putting one slab in and see how it goes from there.

Not so sure about ME, but Win98 certainly can't cope. It failed to boot with more than 768Mb, and regularly bluescreened with 640Mb. 512Mb is stable - if 98 ever is.

BlackRat, XP has no problem with this amount of memory. As JetII said, there may be a motherboard limitation.. .On the other hand, are your fans working? . .Very often the PSU fan does not start and it gets really egg-boiling hot inside the machine.. .. .I cannot highlight enough, with the CPUs running at 1 GHz and more, there is no need for any radiator in your room, the DVD-drive or CD-burner and the harddrives do the rest.. .I am in my company right now in the middle of a test-program and the results are stunning, even representatives of ASUS invited us for dinner after they saw the differences a well designed airflow and cooling set-up can give.. .. .We are testing a 2GHz P4 with 6 SCSI drives, 1.5 GB RAM on an ASUS board, a DVD-burner, a floppy drive and a 128 MB graphics adapter in a new machine. Soundproof cabinet with 15 (!!!!) individual fans, the machine beats whatever was brought in to compare, even with the same (!!!) equipment. While standard cabinets heat up easily to some 40 deg C, our one stayed at below 25 deg C.. .. .Chips, like the one on the RAMs, are due to fail above 70 deg C....

Thanks for the info,it would seem to be motherboard related, had a poke round in the back and found restrictive jumper settings for the processor.Taking memory out didn't resolve the problem. All fans working correctly (plaster firmly affixed to index finger now as proof).Time for a new mobo methinks.Unless FL310 . .you wanna donate that system you have on test!!
