Sorry to steal the thread...needed to "talk" to many people in UK - and this forum was the nearest to the subject....

I'm looking for a mains operated (preferably multi voltage [240v 50 Hz and 110v 60 Hz]), multi format (will play American region 1 as well as European region 2 discs), even better with multiple output formats (NTSC and PAL) and even better with macrovision defeat - that will allow recording of DVD's direct to domestic VHS.

Respond or e-mail if you would. Thanks.

well most new and old dvd machines will play all regions if you fit an emod chop which costs about 50 quid inc fitting by tectronics.

go look up dvd emod chips on google.co.uk and you will see they have all the answers.

Do you mean portable - or just a DVD player?

Check out www.area450.com which has a lot of gen on DVDs UK/US spec etc. Most Sampo players have NTSC/PAL selectable output and easy ability to enable region free operation. I have a REOC A5, available in Safeway Supermarkets for £100-130. Its a rebadged clone of the Sampo 611, available in the US. It is 110/240v, region freeable, has NTSC/PAL output (irrespective of the format of the disc) selectable from the remote and is DVD, VCD, SVCD, MP3 and miniDVD compatible. Macrovision is more difficult but you can buy macrovision removers. I'll find a link for these if poss but the ones I've seen plug in through the scart socket which is a european only output.

Try these for starters:

http://www.gibsoft.com/Product%20pages/dvd_video_decoder_.htm

You might need one of these (transformer):

Best place to go is Techtronics. They supplied DVDs to NASA for the Space Station! They sell machines which are 110/220V and playback PAL-PAL, NTSC-NTSC, NTSC-PAL60. Not sure about PAL-NTSC, never seen one. Their mode disables macrovision amongst other things. They ship worldwide.

Drop them an e-mail.

The following does all regions, all power and PAL-NTSC and NTSC-PAL etc. It does not say if it is Macrovision free, but since that is illegal in the USA they might just have "forgotten" to mention it. They ship to the USA postage free. Again, give them a call.

Thanks guys....

Got a lot of homework to do now, though.

Knew about regions...knew about macrovision ..didn't know about RCE. ******

Already have a step up/step down transformer and a couple of PAL>NTSC>PAL format converters.

<<[edit] Am playing the signal into an NTSC television (36" screen, 4x3 format) through an s-video input. Audio is fed through a Pro-logic surround sound amp...but may upgrade to a 5.1.1 when the bank manager allows.

The VHS recorder is already multi format - can record and/or play in any format, worldwide [end edit]>>
