TNT to lease five 747-400Fs from Atlas. .London (18Feb02, 15:01 GMT, 113 words)

. .European express freight specialist TNT is to dry-lease up to five Boeing 747-400Fs from Atlas Air as the basis of a greatly expanded intercontinental operation, reports ATI sister publication Flight International.

The magazine says TNT intends to expand its Liege, Belgium base into a long-haul hub using Atlas’ “fractional lease” freighter programme. It already uses a single Atlas 747-400F on routes to Johannesburg and Lagos, linking into its core European night-time freight network of 54 cities served by British Aerospace BAe 146s.

TNT Airways managing director Niky Terzakis is quoted as saying Belgian certification of the 747-400F is underway to let TNT’s own pilots fly the type on its own air operator’s certificate.

This remark about the belgian pilots make me ashamed being a commercial pilot for 15 years, former 9 years air force pilot. I met so many nice people in the air and on the ground. Did I lose too much time doing this beautiful job ? But I am still convinced that "people" like you, dutchie, are exceptions. I wouldn't like to find myself in a cockpit with you.

Very intelligent remark Dutchie, this is the same as saying that 100% of the Dutch are arrogant and irritating. That's not entirely true; it's only 99%...(assuming you are Dutch). .And it's hiring 'Belgian'pilots, not 'Belgium' pilots, stupid x-hole

Dutchie is upset cos KLM are trucking their freight to LGG and he can't play with his A300s anymore. Anyway didn't your lot fly for a Belgian carrier once Dutch. A case of the "POT" calling the kettle black wouldn't you say. Chill bro just pass the Kutchie to the left hand side as they say in the Harlem "coffee shops". I am a Belgian pilot. Used to fly Air Force (12 yrs), than Sabena.. .As an outsider one should be carefull about making his opinion about the SN problems. Altough I admit that some things may have been wrong on the union side (but it's always easy to say afterwards), the relationship management - personnel was much more complicated than that.. .Personnaly I rember SN as a bunch of very professional and nice people.... .I have been lucky myself in finding a new job (bad pay - but I'm not complaining) as a pilot again. But when I think about all my collegues and friends (+/- 600) still unemployed, (some) selling their houses and cars, (some) losing their wives/husbands and children, not to mention the ground personnel and cabin crew, ... it breaks my heart.

That's why I want to thank everybody who is responding to the first message in this topic in favour of the Belgian pilots for these potential positions. It is nice to know some people care...

C'mon guys, making this a matter of nationality is quite ridiculous. I bet you know better than that. It's not "The Dutch" or "The Belgians" flying those airplanes, but fortunately it is still "Pilots". And I know more than one excellent pilot from both countries...

Oops should have been a bit more carefull about my Belgium collegues...

The same ones who were damaging the cars of fellow 'European' pilots in Belgium because they were 'stealing' their jobs... There are plenty of SAW and VEX pilots who can agree on that.

There should have been a distinction and I should have said SN pilots, my apologies.. I am still ashamed for being a pilot when thinking about the SN pilots who went on strike because they disagreed with the SN rescue package and by their action chased away the last remaining passengers.. and gave the final push to the airline...

Shamed again when I hear pilots demand that they should be the ones flying A330's and that 'there will be parties waiting' for the BMI pilots that possibly would fly on contract to africa. (speak to your fellow pilot Kanik on this forum about that one....)

Shamed again when I see the reaction of the Pilots at SN versus the ones at Citybird.... Whereas the ones at Citybird worked their butt of to save their free market operation...

I think we should be happy that there will be more 747 jobs in Europe. One of the main reasons to wetlease abroad is to avoid strike actions and union cloud, one of the main dangers when operating Belgium staffed aircraft is just that.

And thus my sincere hope for EUROPEAN AND OPEN MARKET ORIENTED aircrew... (including the right minded Belgium pilots) <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

Let's hope...that TNT is a fair enough company to hires pilots according their experience and qualifications, whether the nationality is UK, Irish, Dutch or Belgian! . .IHMO, the only criteria for chosing pilots should be professionalism, and not nationality!

What is/was ATLAS core business anyway??!!. .They fly for companies all over the world:. .N-registered aircraft, US-pilots, non-US-callsigns, some even painted in foreign flag-carrier paint-schemes.. .They´ve flown on contracts for my non-US company too.. .I don´t have a grudge against them.. .Just don´t start this "unfair competition" cr@p as soon as some US-company has to do it the Euro or Asian way.. .You folks wouldn´t behave any differently, so just relax: Win a couple, lose a couple.

Let´s just hope all this brings some decent longterm jobs for some out-of-work colleagues, and cut the envious bitching, people - Dutch, US or from Mars.
