Just a question from a non-CC.

I hardly read any stories of air rage anymore. Is it your experience that the levels of this have dropped off after the peak of a few years ago or are violent incidents still a regular occurance? - Just wondered...

Erm, there was this well publicised matter of a well known :E supermodel who had a bit of a :{hissy fit recently. OK it was on the ground, but on the aircraft, so I think that may still qualify?
PS Good luck to the VS crew who will now have the dubious pleasure of carrying her. We are well shot of her.:D

is a captain allowed to disembark a passenger insulting one of the crew member ? i'm always shocked when I see some passengers being impolite with crew members. For exemple, a pax walking to go to the toilets while plane is taxiing to the rwy for takeoff, and talking trash to the crew telling him to seat down immediatly. Makes me want to get up and throw the pax out of the plane. :ugh:

Absolutely. But there could be problems. A check must be run to make sure any hold baggage they have is removed- that could take sometime to do. Then it must be checked all their carry on baggage is removed too. Then possibly refuelling needed. Then new ATC departure slot applied for......it is not something to be done easily! Passengers should be given as much slack as possible, maybe some of them are unfamiliar with jet travel and don't realise you cannot just stand up and go to the washroom or get something out of the bin during taxi and after take-off. Nervous passengers can behave strangely, even rudely, but the awful one is drunkards. I hate people who drink to blind stupidity level.

I see. Thanks for the info. Everytime I'm on a plane, I watch crew members and wonder how they manage to be so nice, always smiling, professional. It's a hard job, some pax don't realise it.

No pax don't understand how hard it is, especially when they turn around to you and say your just a waitress in the sky..

What used to be known as 'Air Rage' is now known as 'Disruptive Passengers'. It still happens, day in, day out. In the words of Gerry Adams, "They haven't gone away".

Ive been taught this one:

Pax: Why don't you have any fish! That's ridiculous and you call this an airline ect ect abuse abuse abuse
Cabin Crew: Sorry sir, I think you misunderstood me. I didn't say we have no fuel, just no fish.

I'm afraid sadly, air rage is now so common place that it's no longer a big event with all the surrounding media hype. That's the way of the world today. :(

It was not quite air rage but I once witnessed a pax threaten one of my colleagues because we ran out of hot breakfasts on flight to LHR. For some pax it is as though the earth will stop turning if there is only cereal for breakfast instead of a greasy reheated omlette and one tiny weany sausage.

Not surprised at all, SOME of the flight's Iv'e been on as PAX SOME of the CC have been totally hopeless and rude.:hmm:

Seems that SOME of the Charter Operator's employ SOME very rude CC with no core customer service & people skills whatsoever.

Went to IBZ last year On a charter flight, On the Dep home at night we were having to wait by the aircraft steps for the 2nd bus to come, And SOME of the young CC at the back of the aircraft were looking at us funny & talking about/laughing sarcastically as to say - 'get an F'ing move on' we want to go home.

It was late, 01.00 in the morning we didn't need it.:=

They forgot that we had to wait for another bus, Before we could go anywhere.:ugh:

Then when we got aboard we felt an uneasy atmosphere, They even asked another PAX to show them his passport.:*

All the way back to MAN there was a really bad atmosphere between the PAX & the CC, I thought someone was going to 'kick off' anytime

Seems that SOME of the CC today are totally rude have no people skills for the job itself, No core customer service skills, And have the attitude of - Job & Knock - AKA - get home syndrome.

It is beyond me how SOME of those CC members make it through training in the first place??

In over 25 years of Air travelling Iv'e seen SOME very good CC members and sadly SOME very bad CC members too.

Think SOME of the bad CC members are the one's who are only on a summer contract, As they MAY know that it doesn't matter what they say or do anyway because they will be down the road come October??

The above flight from IBZ was the WORST flight I have ever been on, And as a member of a regular crew I felt 'humiliated' at the attitude of the CC that night, I had a 'red face' and felt very angry towards that crew.

I made a 'Formal' complaint in writing and got an answer.

I'm not surprised that the IBZ summer flights have problems with the PAX.

Having said that I then travelled again with that Perticular Airline 2 months later to ALC and I had a really good friendly CC who couldn't have done enough for you, I told that good CC about my IBZ flight and they were surprised to hear my story.

I did get an indication as to why the IBZ flight was a bad flight.

The IBZ flight had a very large crew - Mostly seasonal crew.

The ALC flight was a small crew - Nearly all regular crew some of whom had been there for many years.

Looking at the 2 flights maybe the answer is there already??

Happy Travels Regards.;)

Calmed down? hardly.

Air passenger 'beyond control,' court records say : Local News : The Rocky Mountain News (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/jun/20/air-passenger-beyond-control-court-records-say/)

denver gets 3-4 diversions a year to unload disruptive pax, because we're about 2 hours from everywhere in the western US - just enough time for the drinks to take effect enroute...

I know that some of my fellow crew can be rude and not customer focussed, obviously they are not in the right job. As cabin crew we are on board for safety and to provide professional service to all our pax. BUT:

You pay peanuts you get monkeys. Look at the terms and conditions and salary for many airlines, they are pretty rubbish.
With low fares often come poor service, I have been on one low cost carrier and found the cabin crew lacking in basic English skills and customer service skills. When you hire Eastern European crew, make them pay for training and uniform etc and treat them like crap working them 12 hours a day what to do you expect? I paid a few pounds for my ticket to get me from A to B. The plane was late but I didn't react and get angry or threaten anybody.

Not justifying it but service everywhere, especially in the UK can be pretty poor. What do you suggest to combat this? I have lost count of the number of times I have walked into a shop and found the staff disinterested and lacking in motivation. I have never found them rude, just unhappy. I take people as I find them and hardly ever recieve bad service. I try to treat people as I would like to be treated when I am at work.

This is what you get with no training and minimum wage. It's all very well to say they should go and get a new job but these people are often limited to what kind of jobs they can do-would you rather they live off benefits?

Back the original issue. I don't think saying 'the cabin crew didn't smile enough/were unfriendly' is going to stand up in a court of law when you are being tried for air-rage offences...try telling a hostie with glass in their head/bruises/broken limbs that you assulted her as her lack of smile and the fact that they weren't very customer focussed.

We live in a very angry society, especially in the UK and USA. I have found other countries to be much calmer and laid back. Maybe it's because I am calm and empathic but I rarely lose my temper or get angry. Maybe it's because I meditate and pratice Yoga. But I think life is too short to get wound up.

Also I have witnessed far far many more rude than crew! Personally I used to get upset at rude pax. Now I just my lucky stars that I am not an unhappy, bitter and lacking control over my emotions! I also feel happy that I do not have to live with said person or work with them everyday. :)

And if a pax ever assulted me I would be pressing charges. It's not acceptable.

It's up to all of us pax and crew to make flying safe and enjoyable! :ok:

In one word, yes! In fact I'll chuck anybody off the flight who cabin crew ask me to. And the reason - I'll not fly anyone who "compromises the safety, conduct or good order" (that's the legal bit) on my flight. Who are the judges of that? You lot are!

Am I just a silly SLF or should airlines ANNOUNCE.... before takeoff when the welcome announcement is done, that certain behaviours are VERBOTEN! i.e. going to the loo, standing up etc. etc at unsafe times. Maybe you do, and if so I stand corrected. I know it's done after landing, about staying in the seat until a complet stop, but am not so sure it's drilled into passengers before take off. Again, maybe I'm wrong. Correct me please.

I feel if a strong warning is given when the plane is moving from the stand, then at least CC can say "well I said this 5 minutes ago, were you not listening"?

And as for the passengers who do not listen to the safety drill,,,,,well don't get me going!

You guys and gals have a tough job, and you do it really well, but I don't know if I would have your patience with some of the idiots on board!

Well, I've had two death threats (neither flew...)

Just the other night, on a night flight, 4 pax were not behaving in an appropriate manner. I did not call the police, as I didn't have enough to go on (evidence, language, etc etc), but I've recorded their behaviour with the company.

I've been witness to several pax being arrested over the years. I find that more and more people get angry easily these days. I don't know if it's because society is going down the pan as such, or maybe people think they have to act like the people in the airline tv programmes. I don't know, I just wish people could be nice to each other. Some people can't seem to understand that things happen that we (as cc) can't control. Whether it's the weather, delays, tech problems or other factors, there is very little we can do to fix it. Some people think that we do certain things to annoy them. Why would I do that? Because I like abuse? I don't think so.

Maybe yoga and meditation should be compulsory for all passengers?

So...

It's all the fault of immigrants then?

Hmmmmm - if only all answers were that easy.

Could we, as they say, simply not go there please - this thread is taking an unpleasant turn, and if it stays on this heading it will be closed

I'm obviously having a bit of a metaphor day.

Totally agree with Virginia and Glamgirl. I'm 25 y/o, I've lived in 3 continents and people are getting more angry everywhere. I really wonder why is that?

Unless someone directly insults me or tries to put it's hands on me, I always stay calm and patient, and if my plane is late or my taxi or the bus or my instructor, so what?

Maybe because I've lived in Africa where I've seen people having REAL problems to deal with like war, death, aids, malaria, famine I'm more patient.

Last day I was at starbucks and a lady was getting angry and unpleasant to the casher just because there was "a price tag missing on a cake", and she was just a client, not the owner, she wasn't even buying that cake. I couldn't believe it.

Nowdays people want to get as much as they can for the least amount of money and get frustrated at the end because their expectations cannot be met.

An eticket top tip: Do not in any circumstances let any of the riff-raff off your flight until all the firsties have had a chance to get off ...

....... or you will have loads of paperwork.

We live in an angry society now. I have been punched, spat on, kicked, had my glasses ripped off me and thrown across the room.

Am not cc, but work in the service industry (health care). People think that workers in the service industry are scum and deserve such treatment. It was not too long ago that a magistrate informed a nurse she should expect to be slapped across the face in the job she did!!

I try to treat people in the way I would like to be treated. I think cc have a hard enough job to do. Courtesy costs nothing.
