27 June 2008 will be the 60th anniversary of the start of the Berlin Airlift, which kept Berliners alive despite Soviet attempts to the contrary.
Yet the key Templehof airport is now planned for closure; despite the wishes of thousands of Berliners, their left wing mayor is pressing ahead with closure plans.

This week's Broadcasting House (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/news/bh/) programme on Radio Four did a lovely piece on Tempelhof.
If you listen again, the feature is about ten minutes from the end of the show.

Done, I had no idea that Tempelhof is the "world's oldest commercial airport". At least the extensions planned by Albert Speer for it as part of "Germania" were never carried through. A huge Swastika laid out on the ground at the terminal approaches would have taken some explaining away!

Unfortunately the closure is now a fait accompli after the referendum on it's survival failed to attract enough interest.(The vote was in favour but the turnout was too low) It is scheduled to close on 31st October. I have never visited Tempelhof and apparently only a handful of airlines continue to use it.I will certainly make the trip before it shuts.
Sadly the PC brigade seem to have it in for anything connected with the Nazis.Being interested in our own history does not make you a sympathiser with their causes.
