I spotted some railway lines at Stafford.

On google earth: 52°49'34.20"N 2° 6'4.40"W

You can't actually see them on GE, and there is only about 50ft of line there, so I am curious as to why they are there?

I know Bicester had a rail link, would it be for the use of supply trains? Imagine that in todays RAF!

At the risk of getting flamed - Stafford used to have quite a bit of a rail network which served HQ, 1, 5, and 7 sites. It was used to bring in and take away all sorts of kit. During the Torrey Canyon incident, we had a large outload of Hunter drop tanks which had to go to a secret airbase just outside Barnstaple in double quick-time. The easiest and fastest way was by special train. On another occasion, some Victor bomb-bay doors were required at Kinloss (the jet had gone VOG whilst on detachment) and the train took the strain. The marshalling yard had a very testing 9-hole pitch and putt course amongst the railway lines.

Anorak mode off.
