There has to be a computer wiz out there that would like to solve this problem for me.

I have a Dell Latitude CPt laptop with a removable CD drive. Can anybody explain why the CD drive has suddenly decided to "try to spin up" as soon as power is applied to the computer even though there is no CD in the drive. The drive starts to spin up then stops and this cycle repeats continually until I open the drive.

Anyone have any ideas..The technical guys at Dell have never heard of it and can offer no clues..

I hope this is enough of a challenge for someone to work it out...

Two possibilities occur to me.

Part of the PC's start up routine is to test all the hardware. So you will also have a quick spin of the floppy (as long as it's enabled in the BIOS). But the "spin up" you describe would not just have started but it would have been there all the time...

More likely is that at some point you used a CD in the drive to install a program, play some music or copy over some data. You shut down the program or even the whole PC with the CD in the drive and the Registry remembers that you did so.

It should go away eventually, but if you want to hurry the process up, try retracing your actions but this time remove the CD before completely closing the application (program) and shutting down the PC.

I think you are on the right track as I may well have done what you say..that is shut down with a music CD in the drive..The problem now is how do I fix it...can it be removed from the registry?.

Suggest you play another CD using the same Media Application that you used before, but this time stop the playback, remove the CD, close the Application (eg Windows Media Player, Quicktime, Realplayer or whatever).

Try closing down and restarting the PC.

Fingers crossed!
