Anyone know when and where 6 squadron will be re-forming with the Typhoon?

I think the official line at the moment is Coltishall in 2010.

I'm a bad, bad, boy...

I thought it was Leeming, plenty of room there now?

Late last year, Leeming seemed to be back on the plot.

It doesn't seem to be now, however.

2010 seems like the earliest possible date, given the Saudi 'interruption'.

6 Sqn will form at Coningsby initially before moving up to RAF Leuchars as the first of Typhoon sqns. Other numberplates tbc.

How long is a piece of string.:(

Pretty much twice as long as half it's length....

By which I mean, who can guess when they'll reform? I mean, look at how the Jag ended it's service. Shockingly short notice.

Blunty.

I heard CAS ACM Torpy give indications that 25 Sqn wouldn't be disbanded for long. Could possibly make a way for a Typhoon Sqn.

Is there a working (or otherwise) Typhoon of the Hawker/Napier persuasion? Something in the back of my mind says that someone was rebuilding one somewhere?

I missed the reserve bit then ratman. So many Squadrons are now reserve squadrons indicating just how deminished our RAF has become.

To those that served.. "THE SHINEY ...":=:=

Cream floats. And to any ex LIV patrons that feel different, The Canopeners were just as good :ok:

41(F) and 16(R) don't even figure!

Something's gone BADLY wrong.

The most distinguished Battle of Britain fighter squadrons (19, 74, 92, 56, 54, and 41) were dead or Reserve numberplates while relatively undistinguished mobs like 25, 3 and 11 remained active.

Time to follow the French example and 'double badge' fighter squadrons, with what are now Flights taking a squadron ID.

JN - 11 does have a considerable claim to fame, being the RAF's first true fighter squadron. 25 was heavily involved in work with AI during the Blitz, and its WW1 record was distinguished. 3 Sqn's WW1 record was equally distinguished, and their WW2 record wasn't exactly shabby.

Much of the rationale for using seniority as the measure of survival of a squadron (excepting 120 and 617 with their special status thanks to early award of their standards) was because when the AHB reviewed the question of which numberplates should survive, it became clear that judging the matter on the level of distinction of their records led to a considerable bias in favour of those squadrons which had served in Europe in WW2, ignoring the WW1 record or distinguished ops in other theatres by other squadrons. When levels of subjectivity and the possibility of distinguished/senior old boys interfering in the numbering process, the use of seniority seemed to be the most sensible solution.

If you have an alternative idea, write a new numberplate policy for the head of the AHB and see if he'll adopt it ;)

And what happened to 6 was criminal!

I have been privileged to fly on both 'distinguished Battle of Britain Fighter Squadrons', and also 'Undistinguished Mobs' during my career.

I find comments to 'Undistinguished Mobs' an insult to those who have given their lives to this country while serving on those Squadrons, and deeply ignorant to the wider history of the Royal Air Force.

You understand the qualification "Relatively"?

And the concepts of "tongue in cheek", "humour" and "stick up your @r$e", I hope?
