What are the various qualifications needed?

Hi guys,

I am just looking for some basic info on the various areas of qualification and how they sit together.

Am I correct in thinking that:
[PPL +] CPL + IR + MCC + All ATPL Theoretical Exams = Frozen ATPL

Are there any other potential qualifications that are needed?

Im not sure if this is why it was put in brackets, but the PPL isnt needed at all.

The PPL most certainly is needed if you carry out modular training. Only integrated training doesn't require PPL issue.

surely it makes more sense to go for the PPL first as when you complete you'll be in a position to accurately determine whether you want to continue further?

i would assume training and flying post PPL are two differing ballgames and one may suit but not the other!!

also, doesn't the hours you build up whilst doing and post PPL count towards your CPL anyway?

Yes, I agree it seems sensible to find out whether you actually enjoy flying before signing up for an integrated course.

The modular route generally involves PPL, hour building/ATPL theory, CPL, ME, IR, MCC.

As far as I know (I was modular myself) the integrated route has a check equivalent to the PPL skills test but you don't actually get a PPL issued mid course.

The reason they dont issue a ppl on the integrated route is quite simply, its pointless. The CPL supersedes the ppl. No point in aplying for a PPL on an integrated course and have to part with lots of money, only to part with more money to apply for a cpl a couple of months later.

Yes, basically those things add up to the fATPL. You will also need a Night Rating which can be done either before or during the CPL. Same goes for a Multi-Engine Class Rating if you do a ME-CPL and ME-IR.

If modular, the IR can be done straight after issue of the PPL but most schools recommend the CPL first. I think the ATPL theory exams also need to be completed before commencing a CPL, or certainly before issue.

The PPL was in [brackets] because as far as I can tell some schools require that you have one before starting the CPL, and others integrate the PPL training as part of the whole course.

I did an RAF Flying Scholarship 9 years ago, so I know I love flying. It is only recently that I have found myself in a position to finance the training.

I think I am going to do the PPL first, and then make a final decision about carrying on. At the school I am looking at, there is £1000 knocked off if you do the *whole* thing as a single course, but I would prefer to make sure that I truly do love it and want to carry on.

In the grand (boom boom) scheme of things, £1000 off isn't going to make a *huge* difference relative to the entire cost of training...
