According to my buddy in Houston, these cuts are mostly made through retirement. Only a handful of the 737 Pilots and FAs will be let go.

Doesn't look good for new hire at CO though till the 787s start to arrive

Jets? TurboProps? We used to fly at 2000AGL and 200kts without A/C in the 9 pax Cessna 402C. Royal Hawaiian it was. Seldom more than two or three seats filled, grand sightseeing and landing at tiny strips like Kona Village Kaupelehu. Now 744 land upwind at Kailua in the lava desert and the coast is inundated with weekenders.

Our local (Cleveland, OH), CBS affiliate is reporting that Continental plans to "mothball 67 planes through 2009".

They also say that:

Houston-based Continental said it will begin pulling back on flights in September, when departures on its mainline operations will drop about 16 percent below September 2007 levels. Fourth-quarter capacity will fall 11 percent.

But it's not all bad news:

Shares of Continental rose 68 cents, or 4.7 percent, to $15.18 in the opening minutes of trading.

Er, what retirements ? since the retirement age change to 65 we have I could count the departures on one hand.

Our early out program consists of 'yeah you can leave'
