Anyone else out there had trouble with McAfee Virus Scan v4 after installing the latest DAT (4162?). Fujitsu Celeron laptop and generic Cyrix 333 both locked up during boot. Solved by going to safe mode and selecting line by line confirmation to discover hang was when VS checks system files. Eventually got into safe mode, uninstalled McAfee and upgraded laptop to latest retail version. Cyrix reverted to previous DAT.
Any ideas why the problem?

Thanks in anticipation.

Yes, absolutely! The 4162 update went well with my Pentium/Win2K PCs and VirusScan 4.0.3a but the Celeron/WinME/VirusScan 5.0.5 system did just as you describe. I got an MSSCAN32 error that required 4 "Rtn"s to get Win to load. In was then so bad that I couldn't uninstall VirusScan using the normal methods.

I got rid of VirusScan by removing as many of the files as I could by brute force then reinstalling it. Then I was able to uninstall it and install the latest version (5.21) followd by the 4162 Update and all was well.

Took some sorting out but all well now.

If you are running Windows Me, the first version of McAfee to work fully was V4.51. All previous versions caused exactly the problem you have described.

If you install a product from scratch it will overwrite any DAT files with the version shipped with the program. Also make sure to update the engine version, otherwise the DAT updates are worthless.

Curioser and curioser, both problem PC's are running Win98SE and VS 4.0.3. On the Cyrix a TescoNet freebee and the laptop a full retail version purchased in May 2000 from PC World. No problem with my own Gateway Pentium 2/450 running Win98 "first ed" and VS5. Difficult to find common themes with this.

Have just done 4163 update together with the engine update to 4.1.50 i.e. SDAT - having real problems, lag on internet with lock ups etc., had to deactivate 'Internet Filter' which has improved matters considerably...it particularly hates Pprune I think because of all the banners!

Running W98, have Mc. Afee 5.21.1, never had probs before after doing an engine update...have complained to McAfee!

McAfee has the same problem on their corporate offerings - hence many of the big players are now switching to Symantec Norton Anti-Virus.

It's a joke really - it just goes to show that Mcafee DO NOT test the virus updates sufficiently.

Very odd, I have two computers, a Compaq laptop and a HP desktop, both running Windows 98SE and IE5.5, had NO trouble with McAfee on either? Although I have their Activeshield through their Clinic membership?
Not Viruscan as such.

I gave McAfee the flick when it failed to detect the "Magistr32?" virus in an email a few months back even though I had the latest virus definition file download from McAfee.
As a result I had to re format my hard drive.
Have been using "Nortons" ever since and very happy with it.It has picked up a few "nasties" since then and taken care of them. :)

I'm a big wrap for PC-Cillin myself. Easy to update, it screens everything (internet or otherwise), very stable.
I tried an older version of norton some time ago and it wouldn't even let me shut down properly, it lasted about 1 hour before it got the flick.
