However, JPMorgan added a qualification yesterday afternoon, noting that the estimated loss did not factor in that Qantas had already "hedged" about 60 per cent of its fuel needs for 2008-09 at an average $US112 a barrel.

QF will raise ticket prices as will every other airline, the sky is not falling.

Oil is kind of a fixed cost.. Why because every aircraft uses it. The only thing that changes it is if you hedge the price.

What this price rise does, is percentage wise , close the operating costs between all of the airlines.

The higher the cost of oil, the closer all ticket prices will be. The difference then will be public perception,, timetables and service.

You may well see a swing away from low cost operators, to the airline with the most flights. One world and Star time tables will be matched.

The wheel is about to complete a full turn. Look to history for the future

The report is predicated on fuel hitting $200/Barrell.
There has already been some demand reduction and the price($160.63/Barrell) is starting to head south.
As has not been said by Chicken Little...the sky aint falling.
Dixon as usual is just being an emotional/devious old woman

If they want to find a good part of that billion bucks the they need only look at the 'thieves' to see where it has gone!:bored:
Oil prices won't change the core plan for QF, a certain person will take the lions share when he leaves.

What? an airline increasing ticket prices? to cover the costs of moving the seat from point A to point B? i thought the point of an airline was to sell a $100 product for as little as possible!

just imagine, airlines selling seats at a profit! and not using staff to take up the slack in revenue with wage and condition cuts!

Yet another completely hopeless article, I think the reporter is trying to brown-nose to management hehe, bring it on 5% is the minimum increase, dont back down with a pathetic 3% :ok:

From a forecast profit of $1.4bil in 2007/08, to a loss of $1bil in 2008/09 is one hell of a turnaround.

Gee, what or rather who can we blame that on?
Those LAMEs who are always taking 4 hours off for those goddam meetings?
Or perhaps all those check-in staff who we no longer employ? (ask family of lady who didn't survive line-up in BNE).
Maybe cabin crew who we have pitted against each other, based all over the world, replaced with hired third world labour (at third world rates) and just recently had the current l/h mob screw (no offence Lisa R) any who would follow in their steps? (Must admit, really enjoyed that one.)
Or the drivers, who we are about to do the same to?
Fuel, terrorists, SARS or equine flu?

How about a management team with no regard for the final product we used to produce, with a smile on our faces and a 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude?
How about a management team that has caused said workforce to now do no more than our petty PM asks us, which if we deviate from is used as a sword against us?
How about a management team with no more regard for passengers than they have for the last dog turd they stepped in?
How about a management team with a collective snout that cannot be removed from any trough?
How about a management team with no foresight past the end of said snout - or their next bonus - whichever is closer?

I've tried to give reasons on both sides for this dramatic turnaround in profit, you can make up your own minds.
Cheers AS.

Back in 2001 Qantas was crying poor when oil approached US$40 per barrel, we will be ruined!
and again and again and again each EBA and we all took pity and no pay rise.

If it hits US$80 p/b were goooone.

Funny thing profits went up just as fast.

History all over again. And yes it's EBA time again. :yuk:

propoganda !:ok:

Propaganda is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behaviors of large numbers of people. As opposed to impartially (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Objectivity_%28journalism%29) providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus lying (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie) by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the cognitive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognition) narrative of the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda.
Propaganda is the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist.
