Anyone know of a programme which will zip around a few web mail-boxes and pick-up mail without having to visit each site 'manually'?

A lot of web mailboxes can be accessed as POP3/SMTP servers. For example, you can access yahoo mail from Microsoft Outlook Express very easily. See http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-03.html

Thanks PPD. I am set up for yahoo. It was the other ones I wondered about. I know some of the mobile networks have not introduced pop mail yet. Is it a 'web crawler' I need or am I way off track?

Web crawlers are generally software robots which scan through the millions of web sites to construct some kind of intelligent index to aid searches. BTW, in my opinion, www.google.com is the best search engine.

I've been trying to reduce the number of email addresses I have, one of the criteria being "if it doesn't support POP, it goes".

Thanks PPD. I've actually been saying the same to my kids for a while!

You could point your browser at www.tucows.com and dredge round the email section for a POPŁ client emailer which will check multiple accounts for you
