Qantas is committed to ensuring that fatigue in all Qantas employees, including contractors and temporary staff, and the risks associated with fatigue, are managed effectively and as consistently as possible. Qantas will endeavour to:
• Ensure that "off-duty" periods are of a duration that provides employees with sufficient opportunity to obtain adequate rest and recovery and to be suitably fit for their next expected period of duty;
• Comply with all relevant legislation;
• Communicate this Policy and related information to all employees and interested parties;
• Provide education materials and other resources to support this Policy as appropriate;
• Increase employees awareness of their responsibilities in relation to fatigue risk management and the strategies that can be employed to fulfil those responsibilities;
• Encourage the self-reporting of fatigue where appropriate; and
• Provide reasonable support for employees who are genuinely unfit for duty due to fatigue and treat all such cases with sensitivity and discretion.
Definition of Fatigue
Fatigue is defined as an experience that involves impairment of physical and/or psychological performance. It occurs largely as a result of sleep loss –
which can be associted with work and/or non work demands-and can be intensified by factors such as prolonged time-on-task,long commutes,harsh work environments and the time of day/night
This piece of Company Policy has the potential to change the way Qantas Manages its operational staff forever.
Employees now have an opportunity to be treated like human beings and not automatons
